Diesel keeps on truckin'

Vegetarian Times,  Feb, 2007  by Brandy Colbert

Diesel's switching to the fast lane when it comes to reducing pollution. An ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel that runs 97 percent cleaner than the previous formula was introduced in October 2006 to conform to new federal guidelines. Combined with a new generation of diesel-fueled engines that hit the road early this year, it could cut soot emissions from the millions of trucks and buses that transport freight and carry commuters and students by up to 95 percent, according to the National Resources Defense Council.

In fact, it would take 60 trucks built with the new engine to equal the soot emissions of one truck built in 1988. The improvements took nearly a decade to come to fruition, as public health advocates, refiners and oil regulators had to work together to arrive at a cost-effective solution for everyone involved, including consumers.
