Well-fed cows
Vegetarian Times, March, 2006
Cows with natural diets produce milk that's healthier for humans. Australian researchers have discovered that the milk from cows allowed to graze on native plants is three times higher in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) than the milk of cows fed supposedly scientific "high-grain diets." PUFAs have many health benefits for humans, including helping to reduce blood cholesterol.
Factory dairy farmers have traditionally tried to increase the level of these healthy fats in milk by supplementing their cows' diets with straw. But straw not only produces lower levels of these healthy fats in the milk, it is also lower in nutritional value than pasture grasses.
