Unhappy meals

Vegetarian Times,  Sept, 2004

A Baylor College of Medicine study published in the March 2004 issue of the American Journal of Public Health finds that as children advance from elementary to middle school, their consumption of fruits, vegetables and milk declines, and they tend to drink more sweetened drinks. The only vegetable they consume more of as they get older is--you guessed it--french fries.

The Texas youngsters in the study ate about a third fewer servings of healthful foods, while their consumption of high-fat vegetables and soft drinks increased by two-thirds. One mason for the decline in nutrition, the researchers found, was that middle school students were less likely to rely on meals provided under the National School Lunch Program; from 35 to 40 percent of middle-schoolers in the study are at snack bars where they had the freedom to choose their own foods.
