Go nuts
Vegetarian Times, July-August, 2004
Food companies are now allowed to tell consumers that walnuts may reduce the risk of heart disease, according to a final ruling by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in late March 2004. Although the research "is not conclusive," the FDA has decided that there is enough evidence to support the claim that eating 1.5 ounces of walnuts per day as part of a low-saturated fat, low-cholesterol diet may be beneficial.
Up for consideration next: similar health claims for omega-3 fatty acids, green tea and calcium.
