Garlic's good - Scoop: health fitness nutrition diet supplements personal care environment - prevention of plaque formation - Brief Article

Vegetarian Times,  June, 2003

> In a small but significant study, researchers from the University of California at Los Angeles have found evidence that garlic extract may inhibit and even reduce the formation of plaque in the arteries, which can, under limited circumstances, reduce the risk of heart attacks. The study, announced at the UCLA Medical Center in March 2003, found that cardiac patients given regular dosages of aged garlic extract "had significantly less coronary plaque formation than did those in the placebo group." Those who consumed garlic extract also had lower levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that can irritate blood vessels, leading to blockages in the arteries.
