Folate & arteries - Quick Studies - Brief Article
Nutrition Action Healthletter, Jan-Feb, 2004
In a 12-year study of more than 46,000 men, those who consumed the most folate (a B-vitamin) from a multivitamin or other supplement had a lower risk of peripheral arterial disease. PAD occurs when clogged leg arteries deliver less blood and oxygen to the legs and feet, which can cause symptoms like pain and sores that won't heal.
What to do: For insurance, take a daily multivitamin-and-mineral supplement that contains 400 mcg of folic acid to reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, PAD, and (if you could become pregnant) of having a child with a neural tube birth defect.
