Also on the increase in popularity of tandem events, the largest of which, the three-day Northwest Tandem Rally in Bend, Oregon, is held each May. There are several other major rallies, including events in Pennsylvania and Ohio. "I think sales have taken off because tandems have finally reached that critical mass," says Goertz, who has been selling tandems since 1980. "Although tandems are no longer a total rarity, they are still scarce. I'm not saying you're going to find one on every street corner, but almost everyone who bicycles knows someone who has a tandem -- it's kind of feeding on itself."

Like other tandem companies, Goertz reports that sales from his home-based dealership, Tandems, Limited, doubled last year and quadrupled during the past two years. But perhaps the best reason for the success of tandems remains the sport's great equalizing factor. "I can go out with my wife and pedal as fast as I can and she'll still finish right there with me," says Lesse, a former competitive cyclist. "Or my wife can pedal as fast as she can, and I'll finish right there with her."
