City Racing 1988-1998: A Partial Account - Institute of Contemporary Arts exhibition - Brief Article

INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS
In 1993, betting shop-turned-gallery City Racing hosted Gillian Wearing's photo series "Signs that say what you want them to say and not signs that say what someone else wants you to say." A twist on Wearing's title--galleries that show what you want them to show--might offer a neat summary of the innovative showroom's ethos. Ten years of independent, not-for-profit programming came to an end in December 1998, but the story continues in ICA curator Matthew Higgs's survey. City Racing artist-founders John Burgess, Keith Coventry, Matt Hale, Paul Noble, and Peter Owen are featured, alongside Sarah Lucas, Jemima Stehli, Ceal Floyer, Lucy Gunning, and other key exhibitors. Jan. 25-Mar. 18.
