Scott Burton's work pulls in contrary directions: toward both the commonplace world of function and the pressurized thought of '60s Minimal and Conceptual art, with its ideas concerning the nature of the art object and the definition of art itself. That is why his chairs and tables never look that vernacular; they always make you think about sculptural issues--about weight, shape, surface, and material. Unlike conventional sculpture, however, they give you a place to sit while doing your thinking. And the idea that you can loosen the parameters of art by making chairs shows just how peculiar those parameters can be. Jan. 27-Apr. 15.
