Minor White - Brief Article
ArtForum, Sept, 2000 by Andy Grundberg
RUPERTINUM MODERNE GALERIE
As heir apparent to Alfred Stieglitz, Minor White was long counted the postwar torchbearer of subjective "art photography." Since his death in 1976, White's influence has all but disappeared, despite a 1989 retrospective at MOMA organized by one of his star pupils, Peter Bunnell. Head of the White archive at Princeton, Bunnell has a hand in this new exhibition too, so a critical revision of the photographer's often abstract images is unlikely. Still, the participation of Eurocurators Filippo Maggia and Peter Weiermair sparks some hope that new takes on White's work will emerge from this 130-picture roundup. The timing is ripe: Abstraction is once again a big ticket in photo-based art--think of Barbara Ess's pinholes or Adam Fuss's photograms. Oct. 19-Dec. 3; travels to Galleria Credito Valtellinese, Milan; Galleria Civica, Maclena.
