According to McNair (2002), there has been a drastic growth in the demand for and consumption of pornography in the U.S. from 1970 to the early 21st century. The annual turnover of the porno industry in 1972 is estimated to be around 10 million dollars. The corresponding figure for 1996 is 8 billion.
