New tricks for old product; Belt-driven system offered as cheaper alternative

Mark IV Automotive Inc. is developing more efficient belt-driven accessory systems as a lower-cost alternative to proposed electric systems.

Current belt drives are fairly efficient, consistently yielding 90- to 98-percent efficiency and therefore better fuel economy, said Dan Engler, vice president of supply management, engineering and product development at Mark IV.

"What that tells you is that a rubber belt is a very effective way to transmit power,'' he said during the Automotive Management Briefing Seminars held recently in Northern Michigan.
