Travels with a Tangerine: A Journey in the Footnotes of Ibn Battutah. Tim Mackintosh-Smith. John Murray. [pound]19.00. 351 pages. ISBN 0-7195-5849-2. The search for the 'real Arabia' has fascinated a certain type of Englishman for over a century and travel books about the Middle East have become a standard publishing genre.
This volume, written by someone fluent in Arabic, takes as its starting point the journeys of the most famous Arabic traveller, the fourteenth century Berber, ibn Battutah. This book follows the first part of ibn Battutah's journeys, from Tangier to Constantinople. The resulting text is a curious combination: a disciple's experience in search of his long dead hero and an intelligent visitor's description of modern life in the areas he visits. It amounts to a travel book with a difference.
