"Our commitment to Cedars-Sinai is an important example of our philanthropic mission to nurture world-class organizations locally, nationally and internationally," said David Saperstein at a private celebration hosted by the Medical Center's Board of Directors on the Cedars-Sinai campus Monday afternoon. "We are gratified to see our support take shape in the Critical Care Tower," said Suzanne Saperstein.
"The Sapersteins have set a new standard for visionary philanthropy here at Cedars-Sinai," said Barbara Factor Bentley, Cedars-Sinai Board Chair at the Monday afternoon event. "We are deeply grateful for their commitment and we are delighted to name the critical care tower in their honor."
"The Sapersteins have accepted a crucial role in the reinvention of our campus by providing us with the means to build a state-of-the-art critical care tower," said Mr. Priselac. "The Suzanne and David Saperstein Critical Care Tower will combine the latest monitoring technology with staffing to provide the most fragile patients with the most sophisticated care available."
The Suzanne and David Saperstein Critical Care Tower also allows for the community's future needs with flex space on four of the Tower's eight floors, which can quickly be adapted to address the changing needs of the patient population. Construction of The Suzanne and David Saperstein Critical Care Tower begins this fall and will be completed in the spring of 2005. It will replace the Schuman and Brown buildings destroyed by the Northridge earthquake in 1994.
Last year, Cedars-Sinai had over 44,854 inpatient admissions, 72,407 visits to the emergency department and performed over 18,000 surgeries. The new facility will allow the Medical Center to meet increased demand in the future.
David Saperstein is the founder and CEO of Five S Capital, Ltd., a Houston, Texas-based partnership that specializes in strategic investments and is engaged in a number of diverse businesses. Mr. Saperstein was also the founder and past Chairman and CEO of Metro Networks Inc., which was acquired by Westwood One, Inc. in 1999.
Both Suzanne and David Saperstein have spent over 20 years supporting many charitable enterprises around the world and making contributions to better society and their community. Mr. Saperstein currently serves as Chairman of the Board of the LA Sheriffs Star Organization, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Music Center in Los Angeles, the Board of Trustees for Houston Jewish Community Foundation, the Toxoplasmosis Research Institute of the Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, the Board of Junior Achievement of Southeast Texas, and the Board of Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, among others. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Mr. Saperstein has also been involved in many children's charities over the years and received the highest civilian award given by the U.S. Marine Corps for working with the Toys for Tots program. Mrs. Saperstein is an accomplished equestrian and has dedicated much of her philanthropic work to animals and to the prevention of animal abuse.
