Apple has introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The Duo is scheduled to reach stores on Oct. 23, more than a month after the new Pro models’ Sept. 18 availability, giving Apple an unusual two-stage iPhone rollout and placing its newest form factor at the top end of the lineup.
The Duo combines a 7.6-inch internal display with a 5.4-inch external screen and adds iPhone features designed for the larger workspace, including two-app Split View and the ability to run two windows from the same app. Apple has not included a Duo price in the announcement text available on its site, but Associated Press reporting and a separate Fox Business report put its U.S. starting price at $1,999. At that level, Duo is a premium addition rather than a price-for-price successor to either Pro model.
A foldable iPhone built around larger-screen software
According to Apple’s Duo announcement, both displays use the same aspect ratio, an approach intended to make the outside screen feel like a compact iPhone while the opened device presents a broader canvas. The company says users can place two apps side by side, or work in two instances of a single app. Apple Pencil support, limited to the USB-C model, is due later in 2026 rather than at the phone’s Oct. 23 launch.
Those details make software adaptation more consequential than the hinge alone. A larger unfolded display can show more information, but it only becomes a productive phone-tablet hybrid if apps handle resizing, multiple windows and side-by-side tasks cleanly. Apple is also bringing Touch ID to the side button on Duo, rather than using the Face ID system found on the Pro phones, another hardware distinction created by the folding design.
The phone uses the A20 Pro processor, a custom vapor chamber and a dual-battery architecture. Apple says its testing found up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro, but that is a company comparison, not an independent benchmark. Apple also calls Duo its thinnest iPhone and says its design enables camera uses unavailable on its other iPhones; those assertions will need to be tested after retail units are available.
Apple is entering a category that remains small despite years of products from Samsung, Google and Motorola. Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, told the Associated Press that foldables account for less than 5% of the overall smartphone market. The Duo’s dimensions are also easy to misread in coverage: Apple says its 7.6-inch inner screen is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display, while the AP report describes it as 80% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro. The percentages use different baseline phones, so they are not competing measurements.
The Pro line keeps the conventional flagship schedule
The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max will open for preorder Sept. 12 and go on sale Sept. 18. Apple lists U.S. starting prices of $1,199 for the Pro and $1,299 for the Pro Max in its official launch release. Both use A20 Pro and a next-generation vapor chamber, so the Duo does not stand apart from the conventional Pro phones merely by having Apple’s newest silicon.
The more visible hardware change on the Pro models is a 48-megapixel main camera with a variable aperture. In practical terms, an aperture is the opening that controls how much light reaches the sensor; a variable system can alter that opening rather than relying on one fixed setting. Apple says the change expands photographic control, but the benefit for image quality, low-light shooting and depth rendering will depend on the camera software and real-world results as well as the mechanism itself.
Apple has also redesigned the Dynamic Island and introduced Apple Reference Image. The company says the feature stores signed sensor data and creates an unalterable reference image through Private Cloud Compute, intended to provide a verifiable companion to an image. It is an interesting response to growing concern about manipulated photos, though Apple’s description leaves the eventual usefulness dependent on who recognizes the reference format and how those records are used outside Apple’s ecosystem.
On artificial intelligence, Apple says Siri AI will begin rolling out in beta with iOS 27. The announcement does not turn that beta label into a guarantee of feature breadth or reliability at launch. That qualification is particularly relevant as phone makers increasingly present on-device and cloud-assisted AI as a reason to upgrade, even when the most ambitious features arrive gradually.
What the staggered launch clarifies
The Duo and the Pro line share a processor generation but solve different product problems. Duo offers an expandable workspace, two-app multitasking and later Pencil support; the Pro phones retain the familiar slab design, reach stores first and introduce the variable-aperture main camera. Apple says Duo preorders begin Oct. 16, with sales beginning Oct. 23.
The launch also marks the first iPhone event under John Ternus, identified as Apple’s chief executive in the Duo release. The Associated Press reported that he succeeded Tim Cook on Sept. 1, after Apple’s July earnings release had still listed Cook as CEO. For buyers, the immediate facts are less about the leadership transition than the calendar and price: the Pro models arrive in September, while Apple’s reported $1,999 foldable waits until late October for its first public test.
