Samsung has clarified that the Galaxy S26 Ultra does not ship with a 10-bit display panel, correcting guidance some media received ahead of launch. In follow-up statements cited by SamMobile and Android Authority, the company said every S26 model uses an 8-bit panel, despite earlier briefings that suggested otherwise.

The reversal matters because color depth is one of the few remaining areas where premium phones try to differentiate their screens. While the S26 Ultra still touts high brightness, adaptive refresh, and anti-reflective glass, the panel’s native bit depth sets a ceiling on how finely it can render gradients and subtle tonal shifts without relying on processing tricks.

The company later confirmed the S26 line is 8-bit, which is 256 levels per channel and 16.7 million colors. That’s a big numerical gap, but the real-world impact tends to appear in edge cases: skies that show banding, skin tones that step instead of flow, or HDR gradients that look slightly coarse.

In day-to-day use, many users won’t notice, especially with well-tuned color management and aggressive dithering. Still, enthusiasts and creators watching high-quality HDR content or editing photos on-device may have expected a native 10-bit panel based on the initial messaging.

8-Bit vs 10-Bit Explained in Plain Language

Think of color depth as the number of rungs on a ladder between black and white for each primary color. An 8-bit panel offers 256 rungs per channel (red, green, blue). A 10-bit panel raises that to 1,024 rungs, allowing far smoother transitions. The difference shows up most in dark scenes, sunsets, and any image with delicate gradients where fewer rungs force the eye to notice steps.

Industry labs often quantify smoothness with measures like Delta E and JNCD (Just Noticeable Color Difference). While those scores depend on calibration as much as hardware depth, a true 10-bit panel has more headroom to avoid banding without leaning as heavily on post-processing.

Samsung also told YouTuber Mrwhosetheboss that it would use technology to “simulate 10-bit.” That typically refers to Frame Rate Control (FRC), a well-known approach where two adjacent 8-bit shades are rapidly alternated to mimic intermediate steps. Done well, FRC can be remarkably convincing, and many premium panels across the industry employ it. Done poorly, it can introduce noise or flicker in specific content.

Samsung hasn’t detailed its exact implementation on the S26 Ultra. The company’s image pipeline can still handle HDR formats and wide color, but without a native 10-bit panel, it relies more on temporal dithering and tone mapping to bridge the gap.

Apple, meanwhile, markets accurate wide-color and HDR performance without dwelling on panel bit depth, leaning on rigorous calibration and processing. The takeaway: native bit depth is one part of the story; tuning, brightness, reflectance, and software all shape what you actually see.

Why the Walkback May Have Happened This Cycle

Supply constraints, cost, power targets, and yield rates can all sway display decisions late in development.
