Meta’s human reviewers have been tasked with watching intimate clips captured by its Ray-Ban smart glasses, according to a joint investigation by Swedish newspapers Svenska Dagbladet and Göteborgs-Posten. Contractors described having to label footage that included nudity, bathroom scenes, and even glimpses of personal financial details—material many wearers likely assumed would never be seen beyond their device.

Behind every “smart” wearable is a less-visible workforce asked to make sense of what the hardware captures. The process, known as data labeling, requires humans to watch and annotate videos so computer vision models learn to identify people, objects, and contexts. For Meta’s Ray-Ban line, that has reportedly meant reviewing first-person footage from bathrooms, bedrooms, and other private spaces—exactly the contexts most users would never knowingly share.

Contractors told the Swedish outlets that many clips appeared accidental or recorded without subjects’ knowledge. That dovetails with broader concerns about wearable cameras: indicators meant to signal recording can be obscured, and hands-free capture makes it easy to film continuously in public and semi-private spaces without drawing attention.

Meta’s terms reserve the right to send interactions with its AI features to human reviewers. In practice, “human-in-the-loop” review is standard across the industry, but the sensitivity of first-person footage—where bystanders and owners rarely expect a second audience—raises unusually acute consent and privacy risks.

Contractors Flag Disturbing Assignments And Pressure

The work cited in the investigation was performed by teams employed by Sama in Kenya, a contractor already facing a class action by content moderators who allege exploitative conditions and psychological harm. Reviewers said they were discouraged from questioning assignments, underscoring the power imbalance that often defines outsourced moderation and labeling work.

Occupational health researchers have long warned that sustained exposure to graphic or highly personal material can cause stress injuries similar to those seen among social media moderators. The difference here is the intimacy and immediacy of wearable footage: body-mounted cameras collapse distance, making even mundane scenes feel uncomfortably close—and making truly private moments far more invasive to watch.

A Privacy Backlash As Sales And Features Grow

Ray-Ban’s Meta-branded glasses launched in 2023 and were refreshed with more powerful on-device AI in a subsequent model. By 2025, sales had tripled year over year to more than 7 million units, according to reporting by CNBC, turning the product from a niche gadget into a mass-market camera you can wear on your face.

That growth has been matched by controversy. Creators have posted content showing how to hide the built-in recording light, undermining one of the few public notice mechanisms the glasses provide. Privacy advocates, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the ACLU, have warned that always-on sensors combined with AI memory features could normalize ambient surveillance, creating databases of faces, voices, and routines without meaningful consent.

Meta has discussed rolling out “live” AI capabilities that keep cameras and sensors active to help an assistant interpret the wearer’s environment. Even if the intent is convenience, those streams can include sensitive data: children’s faces, medical information, or documents visible in a frame. If such content can be routed to human reviewers, the risk profile expands beyond algorithms to the people paid to teach them.

Legal And Ethical Fault Lines For Wearable Recording

In Europe, the General Data Protection Regulation requires a clear legal basis, strict data minimization, and transparent notice for processing personal data—standards that are hard to square with bystander recording and covert capture. Potential biometric processing adds another layer: Meta previously paid a $650 million settlement in Illinois under the state’s Biometric Information Privacy Act for face-recognition practices on its social network, a reminder that courts scrutinize how companies handle face data.

Regulators in multiple jurisdictions have also emphasized that outsourcing does not outsource liability. If contractors are exposed to sensitive data without adequate safeguards, or if users were not reasonably informed that private clips could be reviewed by humans, companies can face enforcement actions, fines, and orders to limit data use.

What Meta Says And The Questions That Remain

When pressed by the Swedish outlets, Meta pointed to its terms stating that interactions with AI services may be reviewed to improve systems. That statement aligns with industry practice but leaves open critical questions: How are intimate clips filtered before they ever reach a human? What controls exist to prevent retention of highly sensitive material? And can wearers meaningfully opt out without crippling core functions?

Trust in wearables hinges on consent and control. Clear recording indicators that cannot be disabled, strict limits on human review of private contexts, default data minimization, and robust worker protections are no longer nice-to-haves—they are prerequisites for legitimacy. Until companies demonstrate those safeguards, every new “smart” upgrade risks feeling less like innovation and more like a surveillance tax paid in human attention.
