The concern is not a sci‑fi rogue system but a real‑world spiral: as agentic software rapidly replaces white‑collar tasks across firms, demand falls faster than new income is created, compressing margins and repricing risk across markets.

The scenario sounds extreme until you map where agents are being aimed—procurement, customer support, sales ops, accounting, code maintenance—and note how intertwined those functions are across supply chains. If thousands of companies adopt identical cost‑cutting strategies at once, the result is a highly correlated shock.

If an enterprise agent can operate the CRM, write and ship the campaign, reconcile the ledger, and negotiate with suppliers over APIs, the value of many point solutions and third‑party contractors collapses.

This is not theoretical. A major fintech, Klarna, reported its AI assistant now handles most support chats, work it equated to hundreds of agents. IBM’s chief executive has said hiring for several back‑office functions would pause as AI takes over parts of those jobs. Multiply such moves across marketing agencies, call centers, and SMB SaaS, and you get a synchronized reduction in B2B spend—a revenue shock for entire ecosystems, not just a handful of vendors.

Financial Contagion from Automation Across Markets

Markets are not insulated from correlated decision‑making. The Bank for International Settlements has warned that AI‑driven strategies can amplify pro‑cyclical behavior. We have precedents: the 2010 Flash Crash and Knight Capital’s 2012 software error, which vaporized $440 million in minutes, showed how automated systems can cascade through liquidity and risk models.

Now transpose that logic to the real economy. If procurement agents across retailers simultaneously tighten reorder points based on similar predictive signals, upstream suppliers face abrupt demand shocks. If CFO agents converge on the same cost‑of‑capital thresholds, capex dries up in unison. Equity valuations, built on earnings paths assuming resilient demand and human‑paced restructuring, would need to reset quickly, pressuring credit and venture funding that depend on those multiples.

Labor Displacement at Unprecedented Speed

AI’s short‑run effect is task substitution more than job destruction, but agents compress the substitution cycle. Clerical and administrative roles are heavily exposed; the International Labour Organization has flagged that a large share of tasks in these categories are directly automatable by generative models. Goldman Sachs has estimated up to 300 million full‑time roles worldwide could be affected to some degree as generative AI diffuses.

Its sweet spot overlaps with coordination, judgment, and interface work—the glue of modern white‑collar economies. And because agents can operate 24/7 across software stacks, their marginal cost trends toward zero, intensifying a “profitless productivity” dynamic if demand cannot keep pace.

Concentration compounds the risk. If a handful of hyperscalers provide the models, compute, and tooling, strategic decisions across industries may hinge on the same benchmarks, safety filters, and model updates. A single misspecification or adversarial exploit could ripple across millions of workflows at once.

What Would Prevent An AI‑Driven Hard Landing

Prevention starts with pacing and transparency. Regulators can require phased rollouts for agentic systems in sensitive domains, stress‑testing for correlated behaviors, and auditable logs of agent decisions. Firms should implement “circuit breakers” in planning and procurement—guardrails that throttle automated cost cuts or inventory shifts when metrics move abnormally in tandem across business units.

On the demand side, automatic stabilizers matter. Enhanced unemployment insurance, wage insurance for displaced workers, and temporary payroll tax relief can cushion local shocks. Targeted incentives for job creation in AI‑complementary sectors—healthcare, energy transition, advanced manufacturing—help convert productivity into new incomes rather than layoffs.

Competition policy will shape the trajectory. Ensuring open model access, data portability, and interoperability between agents reduces lock‑in and dampens the temptation for synchronized strategies. Clear guidance on algorithmic collusion—where independent agents inadvertently arrive at anti‑competitive pricing—should arrive before abuses do.

AI agents can deliver genuine abundance. But absent deliberate pacing and macro‑aware deployment, they could also pull the economy into a deflationary eddy—higher output, fewer paychecks, and fragile markets. The window to engineer a soft landing is open now, while most agents still answer to a human in the loop.
