Are your headlines coming from a chatbot? Most Americans aren’t. New data from the Pew Research Center shows that while AI is inching into the public’s daily lives, it hasn’t quite solved its journalism problem by becoming people’s primary source of news.
Pew’s survey offers a cautious picture: Just a sliver of adults rely on AI for news at least some of the time—and even they are leery of what they encounter. The data reveals who’s playing with AI news, who’s opting out, and—most interestingly—why the technology is still struggling to keep up with fast-moving, high-stakes information.

Only 9% of Americans get news from AI chatbots sometimes or often, according to Pew, with 2% saying they do so often and 7% saying they do so sometimes. Another 16% say they do so rarely; 75% never use AI for news. That leaves AI on the periphery of news consumption, even though it looms large elsewhere in tech.
Trust remains the sticking point. Of those who do use AI to get the news, around a third say it’s difficult to know what is true and false, with the biggest chunk—about four in 10—saying they don’t even know if it’s possible. Why AI is still so bad at delivering fast-breaking news
Large language models are at their best when the data is structured, and a lot of it. News is exactly the opposite: It’s dynamic, it’s contested, and much of the time it’s incomplete. Retrieval‑augmented generation has the potential to ground answers in newer sources, but open challenges still exist for local stories that receive little news coverage and paywalled content, as well as summaries of events with quickly developing facts. Without transparent citations and editorial oversight, even competent distillations can be misleading.
Trust and accuracy are still sticking points
Users in America are used to looking for bylines, corrections policies, and visible sourcing from their news providers. Chatbots don’t have that scaffolding, and that drives trust down. Surveys from the likes of the Reuters Institute and Gallup already show that confidence in news is shaky as it is; AI, with opaque training data and relatively little attribution to go on, starts off somewhat lower in the public’s accounting.
And the news organizations are responding with controlled experimentation in place of radical replacement. The Associated Press and other organizations have released guidelines that stress verification, human oversight, and transparency about when and how AI is being utilized. In the meantime, provenance efforts like C2PA—the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, whose members include publishers and tech giants—seeks to label a piece of content’s history of creation and editing so audiences can determine its authenticity.

The near‑term world looks more like Pew’s findings: AI will most likely still be an assistant, not the author, of many people’s news diets.
The rate of adoption may be higher among younger, more tech‑forward users, but widespread use depends on better sourcing, fewer hallucinations, and clearer accountability. Signs to look out for:
