Glasses offer wider appeal when headsets fail. Vision Pro debuted for $3,499 and offered some stunning visuals, but weight, comfort, and price meant it was always destined to be niche. Lighter glasses can rely on the silicon in the iPhone for compute, separate out a bit of battery bulk, and arrive at a lower price — all pivotal to consumer adoption and day-to-day wear.
Internally, Apple has been pursuing two smart glasses tracks, according to people with direct knowledge of the work. One, which is said to be codenamed N50, connects to an iPhone and discards in-lens displays. Supply chain chatter suggests a performance and efficiency boost from new Apple silicon, but the larger, lighter Vision Pro sequel perhaps seems poised to get nudged back behind thick-rimmed glasses on Apple’s list of priorities at this point.
Competitive Pressure and Market Timing in Smart Glasses
Meta has been pulling away in everyday smart eyeglasses. Its new Ray-Ban model integrates an in-lens display and broader assistant features, pointing to where consumer interest is headed: from hands-free capture to quick messaging, navigation, and alerts, all in a frame that looks like something you could wear off the shelf. Google, Snap, and Qualcomm’s reference platforms have each advanced portions of the puzzle, but it’s Meta’s retail momentum that has likely focused Apple’s calculus.

What Apple’s Smart Glasses Might Do Well
Apple can win on integration. Think glanceable directions that flow from Apple Maps, real-time transcription in Notes, hands-free photo and short video capture dumped into Photos, and quiet reminders from Calendar or Reminders. With on-device Apple Intelligence and a privacy-first stance, glasses could run more custom queries locally, show clear recording indicators for front- or back-facing footage, and rely on iPhone connectivity to tamp down battery needs.
Importantly, this is similar to the way in which Apple Watch was built: as an appendage of the iPhone to begin with and a more independent device over time. The technical hurdles are real. The spectacles must deliver bright, color-accurate optics in a small volume.
