Xbox has created XP, a new division meant to extend its game franchises into film and television, consumer products, brand partnerships and live experiences. The October 8 announcement formalizes a cross-media operation inside Microsoft’s gaming business at a moment when game properties are increasingly being developed as entertainment brands with lives well beyond a console or PC screen.

Kayleen Walters, formerly president of Minecraft maker Mojang, will lead XP as president. In its official announcement, Xbox said the group brings together capabilities that had previously been distributed across its teams, while maintaining that games will remain the center of each franchise.

Four businesses under one Xbox umbrella

XP is organized around four named investment areas: Xbox Pictures, Xbox Products, Xbox Places and Xbox Partnerships. The structure is broader than a conventional screen-adaptation label. It gives Xbox a defined home for the licensing, experiential and marketing work that can accompany a major game property as it moves into other media and physical spaces.

Xbox Pictures will focus on film, television and other linear storytelling. Xbox Products covers consumer goods, while Xbox Places encompasses live and immersive experiences, attractions, broadcasts and destinations. Xbox Partnerships is intended to work across creators, brands, communities, sponsorships and other brand partnerships.

XP combines screen, consumer-products, live-experience and partnership functions in one Xbox division.

That division of labor offers a clearer map of what Xbox means by franchise expansion. A successful property could potentially be considered not only for a series or film, but also for licensed goods, event programming and third-party promotional alliances. Xbox said XP will work with talent from its own studios as well as outside partners, rather than treating these extensions as separate from the game teams that originate the worlds and characters.

Pictures has a screen mandate, but no announced production slate

The launch arrives after Xbox-owned franchises including Fallout, Halo and Minecraft have reached television or film audiences. CNET’s coverage framed the division as an effort to pursue more such adaptations, placing the new unit within the wider competition among game publishers to turn recognizable interactive properties into screen entertainment.

But Xbox has not announced a list of XP productions, release dates or a production pipeline. Its statement says Xbox Pictures will bring the company’s worlds and characters to new audiences, without specifying whether the unit will make projects internally, finance them, or chiefly develop and license intellectual property to other companies.

That operational question remains open in the public announcement. The Hollywood Reporter, citing an internal staff memo, reported that XP is not itself a production company and is expected to connect Xbox properties with suitable outside production partners. That account supplies useful detail on the likely partner model, but it should not be confused with a newly announced in-house studio or a confirmed slate of films and series.

The distinction has practical consequences for Hollywood. An IP-focused group can shape franchise strategy, select collaborators and protect the creative identity of game worlds while relying on established studios, networks and streamers to handle physical production. Xbox’s public language supports the new unit’s screen remit; the precise production arrangement will depend on deals that have not yet been disclosed.

Walters’ move also changes Mojang’s leadership

Walters’ appointment links XP to one of Xbox’s most globally recognizable game businesses, but Xbox has not said that her new role is limited to Minecraft or any single franchise. She is moving from Mojang’s presidency to oversee a division intended to serve properties across Xbox.

The transition also sets up a leadership change at Mojang. The Hollywood Reporter and CNET reported that Maria Angelidou-Smith is scheduled to become Mojang’s chief executive on October 19, following Walters’ move to XP. The timing separates the organizational launch on October 8 from the handoff at the studio behind Minecraft.

Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball described the company’s ambition in the announcement as becoming the world’s leading entertainment company. That is an executive goal rather than a measure XP has achieved. What is concrete is the new organizational remit: screen storytelling, products, places and partnerships now sit together in a dedicated division led by Walters, with games still identified by Xbox as the franchises’ foundation.
