Tesla Demonstrates Thruster-Assisted Roadster Prototype in Texas

Tesla has demonstrated a next-generation Roadster prototype using compressed-gas thrusters and active aerodynamic systems in a driverless display at SpaceX’s McGregor, Texas, facility. The car jumped, negotiated an inverted ramp and returned to the ground on its wheels, according to accounts published after the event.

Elon Musk called the vehicle a flying car and said Tesla expects to begin production in 2028. The display showed a controlled prototype performing brief flight-like maneuvers, not a certified aircraft or a consumer vehicle cleared for ordinary roads. Tesla has not publicly released a product specification sheet, and the reports did not include independent test data.

What Tesla demonstrated

The Roadster ran without a driver, a decision Musk said was made for safety reasons. AFP’s report published by Phys.org described a prototype that rose into the air and landed after traversing an inverted-ramp sequence. Popular Mechanics also reported that the vehicle performed a jump and the upside-down maneuver at the McGregor event.

The available accounts describe two distinct systems rather than one technology that lets the car fly under sustained power. Tesla vehicle engineering head Lars Moravy told WIRED that fans and deployable skirts generate sufficient downforce to keep the car attached to the inverted ramp. That system pushes the vehicle toward a surface rather than providing conventional aircraft lift.

Reports describe separate systems for ramp adhesion and short thrust-assisted maneuvers.

For the jump and its attitude control, Moravy described a separate cold-gas system using nitrogen thrusters. He said it could use as much as 600 liters of carbon-overwrapped pressure vessels, with refilling currently taking six to seven hours. Musk, meanwhile, said the vehicle has 10 nozzles and high-pressure tanks intended to assist rapid acceleration and short aerial movement. Those details describe proposed hardware, but Tesla has not publicly released a product specification sheet, and the reports did not include independent test data.

Tesla also claimed performance beyond the thruster display, including a 0-to-60-mph time of less than one second and a top speed of 230 mph. Such figures are company claims. No independent road test, range measurement or standardized performance verification was reported alongside the demonstration.

Limits of the flying-car label

A car that can briefly leave the ground is not automatically an aircraft, and the reported Roadster display does not establish that it can take off, navigate airspace, sustain flight or land in the way aviation regulators would expect. Reports describe the demonstration at a controlled test site with an inverted ramp, rather than in public-road or general-aviation conditions.

Euronews reported that the Roadster’s flight-like features are not approved for public-road use. The outlet also cited the European Union Aviation Safety Agency’s general position that a vehicle intended to operate as an aircraft would need to meet applicable aviation-safety requirements. That is not a ruling on Tesla’s prototype, but it outlines the difference between the demonstration and a legally deployable flying vehicle.

The cited reports did not explain how Tesla would maintain the system in customer vehicles, how often it would require refilling, or its effect on electric range. WIRED reported Moravy’s statement that refilling the nitrogen system currently takes six to seven hours.

The demonstration supports the possibility of a supercar feature providing very short bursts of thrust or control. It does not demonstrate a vehicle that functions as personal air transport.

A delayed product receives a new target

The new Roadster has been a long-running Tesla project. The company first unveiled the model in 2017, and Musk publicly floated the idea of thruster-assisted flight in 2018, according to Euronews. Earlier delivery expectations slipped; WIRED notes that a previously stated 2020 delivery target was not met.

Musk’s latest date is a renewed commitment, not a confirmed manufacturing schedule. Multiple outlets reported his statement that production is expected in 2028, while Euronews and Phys.org reported that Tesla has opened reservations for Roadster variants without announcing final retail prices. Reservations do not establish production readiness or delivery certainty.

Analysts cited by Euronews said the Roadster’s commercial contribution may be more about Tesla’s brand than substantial profit, suggesting it could function primarily as a halo product.

The McGregor demonstration established short, controlled maneuvers by a prototype. Specifications, production timing and public-use approvals remain unverified Tesla claims or targets.
