Netflix Plans Roughly 1,000 Job Cuts Across Key Teams

Netflix has told employees it plans to eliminate roughly 6% of its workforce, or about 1,000 positions, in a global reduction expected to fall most heavily on product, technology, legal and human-resources teams. The planned cuts are the company’s largest reported workforce reduction since 2022 and arrive less than a week before its scheduled third-quarter earnings report.

Co-chief executives Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters framed the action as a decision about allocating people and capital rather than a retreat from the company’s growth plans. In an employee memo published by Variety, the executives said Netflix remained on track to meet its full-year forecast while continuing to invest in areas where it expects the highest impact.

Reductions target corporate and technical functions

The company said leaders would begin contacting affected employees soon, with the process varying among countries. Both the BBC and Variety reported that the largest impacts are expected in product, technology, legal and human-resources functions.

That description identifies the broad parts of Netflix’s organization facing cuts, but it does not establish which individual projects, products or geographic offices will be reduced. Nor has the company publicly detailed the timing of every departure or the final number of positions affected. The employee communication uses an approximate percentage, and outside reports use an approximate job total.

The two measurements are directionally aligned. Variety reported Netflix had about 16,000 full-time employees at the end of 2025, making a reduction of roughly 6% broadly consistent with an estimate of about 1,000 jobs. The figures should not be read as a final headcount: Netflix described the percentage as “roughly,” and the reported job number is likewise rounded.

Management’s rationale and the outside context

Sarandos and Peters said Netflix needs discipline in deciding where to place its people and resources as it pursues its broader entertainment strategy. They also told employees that the business was strong and growing. Those are management’s stated reasons for the organizational changes; they do not attribute the cuts to a financial shortfall.

Outside analysis has offered a wider interpretation. Ross Benes, a senior analyst at eMarketer, told the BBC that Netflix needs additional significant revenue sources as its subscription business approaches a potential ceiling. That view is analysis, not a stated explanation from Netflix, and the company’s memo did not tie the layoffs to any particular revenue line or operating problem.

Variety separately reported that some investor attention has focused on engagement per user during the first half of 2026. That concern provides market context ahead of results, but it is distinct from the company’s formal message to employees, which emphasized prioritization and continued investment. Netflix is scheduled to report third-quarter results on Oct. 20, six days after the workforce announcement.

A larger cut than the 2022 round

Netflix last made a major round of layoffs in 2022, eliminating about 450 jobs after its first quarterly subscriber decline in more than a decade, according to the BBC and Variety. The newly announced reduction is more than twice that reported 2022 total, based on the approximate figures disclosed in the two episodes.

The current planned reduction is larger than Netflix’s reported 2022 layoff round, though the final 2026 total has not been specified.

The historical comparison clarifies the scale of the current plan, but it does not settle whether this is Netflix’s largest workforce reduction ever. Variety characterized it as the company’s biggest layoff to date, while the BBC called it the steepest since 2022. Available reporting clearly establishes that it exceeds the 2022 cuts; it does not provide a complete record of every prior staffing action needed to independently confirm an all-time ranking.

For investors, the near-term issue is whether Netflix can preserve its full-year outlook while reducing capacity in functions that support its product and operating infrastructure. The company has said it intends to keep funding selected high-impact areas, but has not identified those investments or quantified expected savings from the job reductions. Those details may remain unresolved when Netflix reports earnings next week.
