Apple recently released its latest watches, but the smartest purchases right now are the deals popping up on current models. Retailers usually reduce stock shortly after a debut, and that’s when cost-minded consumers can find significant deals on the Apple Watch Series 10, Ultra 2, Series 9 (refurbished) and the affordable Watch SE (2nd gen).

If you’re the frugal type who still wants premium features, this is the window of opportunity to pounce. You’ll find discounts, certified-refurbished deals and carrier promos that make last year’s hardware a no-brainer — often with performance and health features that feel about right now.

Why last year’s models are the sweet spot

Most new announcements lead to broad price cuts within days. Common historical tracking shows that discounts on Apple Watches, ranging from 10–20%, are available on a significant basis through all major deal trackers, with deeper discounts seen on refurbished/third-party open-box depending on the unit size and color selected. Cash discounts are generally led by the big-box retailers while the carriers offset it with prices that are reduced with bill credits that are linked to service.

Most importantly to me, Apple also supports its watches with years of software updates. So Series 10, Ultra 2, and even Series 9 all benefit. A software-update life cycle this long means Apple Watch models remain relevant for the long-haul – long after the initial ‘new release’ hoopla. Apple regularly tops worldwide smartwatch shipments, thanks to long-term support and strong resale value that also makes buying a refurbished unit less of a risk than with many rivals, according to Counterpoint Research.

The best Apple Watch deals available now

Apple Watch Series 10: The best overall pick. Find the GPS versions for $50 to $100 off the sale price in both sizes and deeper percs for certain finishes. Some new features on Series 10 include a slick modernized design, fast performer and a brighter display that’s easy to read outdoors. For most people coming from a Series 6–8 or first-gen SE, this is the price-to-longevity sweet spot.

Apple Watch Ultra 2: The adventure watch at a more approachable price. The biggest absolute-dollar savings will be on renewed and certified-refurb units. With its rugged case, extended battery life, and extra bright screen, the Ultra 2 is the top watch choice for hikers, divers, and endurance athletes. This — not the Ultra if you don’t require the latest, is where premium meets practical.

Apple Watch Series 9 (refurbished): The sneaky value play. With trade-ins or certified-refurb deals, Series 9 tends to undercut Series 10 by a respectable amount, all while offering fast performance, accurate fitness tracking and a range of gestures, including double tap. (Also keep in mind that some of those regions have seen different Blood Oxygen features in different sales batches, and that what follows unpacks for the much-scoured statutory disclaimer on the Chinese product listing.)

Apple Watch SE (2nd gen): Least expensive, most versatile. This is still the simple recommendation for those new to the world of smartwatches, teens just joining via a Family Setup plan or self-confessed luddites who need to power up the essentials of safety and fitness on their wrist, without the financial splurge. You’ll routinely see $30–$80 off. The SE has sleep tracking, crash detection, fall detection, Apple Pay and notifications, but not the premium sensors on the pricier watches like ECG and an always-on display.

Last year's models are the price-performance sweet spot for budget-savvy buyers

Where to find the real deals

Major retailers: Amazon, Walmart and Target often rotate color-specific discounts. Hang tight for the larger case sizes and cellular models — these are ones that often absorb the steepest percentage discounts once inventory builds.

Certified refurbished: Apple, which sells our favorite refurbished iPhones, doesn’t cut any corners on new battery and outer shell, and tosses in the same one-year warranty as new. Morally sound marketplaces, such as the Amazon Renewed Premium scheme and specialist refurb sellers, will usually come with at least a one-year guarantee and 30-day returns. Search for explicit battery health numbers and even photos of the unit, if at all possible.

Carrier promos: If you’re adding a line, carriers can discount cellular models steeply via monthly bill credits. It’s usually worth doing only if you need a line, though. The headline price sounds awesome, but don’t forget to check the fine print on contract duration, required lines and activation fees to make sure the math adds up in your favor.

How to choose the right deal

Case size and fit: Small wrists typically prefer 40–41–42mm models, and the 45–46–49mm cases lend themselves to better readability and power autonomy. Put one on if you can; comfort contributes significantly to performance when you’re wearing the watch nonstop.

GPS vs Cellular: GPS-only is the better buy for most. Select cellular if you need calls, streaming and messaging away from your iPhone, or you’re configuring a watch for a child or older person with Family Setup.

Battery and durability: Ultra 2 is more efficient and durable than the mainstream line, but is also heavy. It’s one for runners, cyclists, swimmers who value battery and ruggedness over everything else; everyone else will make do fine with a discounted Series 10, or a reconditioned Series 9.

A note on health features and updates

Apple’s ECG app and irregular rhythm notifications have been cleared by the FDA for some time, and watchOS updates have consistently expanded our safety net with features like fall and crash detection. Be aware that the Blood Oxygen feature may or may not be available globally and with all model batches, so check the feature list in the listing or with the seller if it matters to you.

Bottom line: The older Apple Watches have never been this good of a deal, with new models on the way. If you’re someone looking for flagship features without the price, Series 10 or Ultra 2 are what you should be aiming for. If you simply want reliable essentials at the lowest price, it’s difficult to beat the SE (2nd gen) and refurbished Series 9. Be patient, check the warranty details, and let the post-launch price dip be on your side.
