The OnePlus 15 will be released to all and sundry according to the company, and we’ve also had a new look at the industrial design of the device. What’s more, the company is doubling down on durability and tactility this time around with a new Sand Storm colorway, an aerospace-grade coating on the frame, and a reworked hardware layout that sees the old fan-favorite Alert Slider replaced with a customizable Plus Key.

Global Debut Signals a Bigger Push Across Key Markets

Although the brand has not specifically listed all of the markets, the commitment to a global release suggests that OnePlus may be looking to do what it has done for recent devices and make them available simultaneously in Asia, Europe, and North America. That means something: wider day-one availability stifles price arbitrage and gray-market imports and sustains momentum with carriers and store partners. Industry trackers have, of course, always pointed out that global synchronized releases keep Android OEMs top-of-mind, despite the fact they’re fighting against competitors not as scrupulous about the worldwide launch.

Sand Storm Finish And Aerospace Grade Coating

The headline design shift is a new Sand Storm finish—dune-inspired, wedged between beige and taupe—that stripes the camera housing and mid-frame. OnePlus says it’s applying aerospace-grade Micro-Arc Oxidation, a high-voltage plasma treatment that grows a ceramic layer directly on metal. The company says the resulting surface is more than three times as hard as a standard aluminum frame, a significant boost for scratch and wear resistance without the brittleness associated with full-ceramic builds.

MAO has been utilized for many years in aerospace and high-performance components where the surface is required to be hard, yet still maintain structural properties. By introducing it on a regular flagship, it implies OnePlus is prioritizing long-term finish durability—something matte aluminum frames are likely not to. These tend to show micro-abrasions more rapidly. Done well, it could feel as grippy and warm as metal but last longer than a ceramic-like shell.

Camera Island Details And The New Plus Key

Official images and brand posts floated on Weibo, as covered by independent tech outlets, reveal a top-left camera cluster with an unblemished squared-off enclosure which smoothly transitions into the frame. The styling here seems to be a little more reined in than the oversized circles going elsewhere, and perhaps that will play positively towards pocketability and cases.

One far more controversial omission is the lack of the Alert Slider. OnePlus is replacing it with a Plus Key—its version of a programmable hardware button. Anticipate that the Plus button will handle shortcuts such as launching the camera, taking quick voice notes, or switching performance modes on and off, though it’d be the software depth—like per-app actions, layers for long-press, and integration with routines across Google’s services—that would make this shift a downgrade or a power-user upgrade feature. Hardware placement also matters. Early reachability-focused shots suggest single-handed use should be fine, but left/right-side bias will become an issue with longtime fans.

High-Refresh Display And Next-Gen Silicon

The OnePlus 15 will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. More than just raw CPU/GPU improvements, the real-world gains come with improved modem performance and on-device AI acceleration. Qualcomm has been promoting higher-end NPUs and camera pipelines; that fits in with OnePlus’s new DetailMax image engine, which the company says uses “advanced algorithms” to produce clearer, more lifelike shots.

The display elevates to a 165Hz refresh rate—higher than flagships like the current 120Hz standard. For day-to-day usage, this extra headroom can help maintain smoothness when you’re scrolling fast and reduces the input latency for gaming. There are already competitive mobile games that scale up beyond 120 fps on supported hardware; a 165Hz panel provides developers enough leeway to push frame rates without experiencing tearing when paired with the right kind of variable refresh control.

What We Know and What’s Still Under Wraps

We know that the OnePlus 15 is a global launch, that there’s a Sand Storm finish with Micro-Arc Oxidation on the frame and camera housing, moving to a Plus Key solution and a display capable of 165Hz, using Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 hardware to power the DetailMax camera system.

We’ve also seen it from multiple angles in official photos through the company’s Weibo accounts, providing a good look at the back panel, button configuration, and camera housing.

Key questions remain. OnePlus, which hasn’t provided public timing for general availability beyond an initial unveiling in China, also hasn’t offered pricing guidance yet. The battery capacity, charging wattage, sensor details, and even IP rating are a mystery. With OnePlus’s history of aggressive wired charging and leading base storage tiers, expectations are high—but confirmation will be key, particularly in markets where carrier demands require feature parity.

The broader takeaway: OnePlus is opting for materials science and interaction changes to be different, not crazy form factors. If that ceramicized frame is as tough as it’s being hyped and the Plus Key justifies itself with the new level of customization offered, the OnePlus 15 could have a design story that appeals to both long-time fans and would-be switchers on the lookout for a carefully crafted Android flagship.
