Google and Mercedes unveil Gemini in-car

Google and Mercedes-Benz have just provided the clearest glimpse to date of how a large language model drives, and it’s more than an upgrade in voice commands.

During a filmed drive of the new Mercedes CLA around Google’s campus, they showed off a Gemini-powered MBUX Virtual Assistant holding fluid, context-aware conversations that bear more resemblance to chatting with a smart co-pilot than with one of those old-school in-car chatbots.

What the Gemini-powered MBUX driving demo revealed

The interaction begins with a simple command to navigate to an address. The driver then asks for nearby coffee shops — no wake words, no wholly prescribed phrasing. The assistant offers alternatives, suggests one, and — after being asked if it serves pastries — draws information from Google Maps to ascertain. It’s an intuitive, responsive process that mimics the conversational rhythm of Gemini Live on phones.

Next, a driver looks for an Italian restaurant and wants to know if it has a good wine selection. The assistant not only finds candidates but recommends calling the restaurant to verify, cleverly passing off from that suggestion to an action. The critical distinction is one of continuity: Follow-up questions are context that isn’t lost, and the system changes tasks without forcing the driver to repeat themself.

How It’s Different From Legacy Assistants

Traditional in-car voice systems are usually intent-based: one question, one answer. Gemini’s multimodal architecture supports chaining of tasks and referencing previous prompts. That’s the sort of thing that makes a routine POI query become a conversation about menu items, hours, and next steps like calling ahead.

Google’s stack matters here. When Maps fetches live business data and navigation context, the assistant receives high-quality, real-time information. And as the experience is baked into Mercedes’ MBUX Virtual Assistant, the car can react in the appropriate modality—onscreen lists, spoken suggestions, or an offer to make a call—without making the driver drill through menus.

The upshot is that there’s less “tell me a command” and more “help me make a decision,” which is exactly the spot where many previous assistants were found wanting. Embedded voice recognition ranks among the top owner frustrations in J.D. Power surveys, and a system that is better able to understand nuance and context could dramatically reshape that perception.

Where the Gemini-powered assistant lands first

According to Mercedes, the new CLA will be the first regular production car to come equipped with this Gemini-inspired experience. Google, on the other hand, has already hinted that Gemini is also on its way to work with Android Auto and automobiles that feature Google inside. Other automakers that have been previously announced include Lincoln, Renault, and Honda; however, widespread availability has not yet arrived.

There’s definitely a staggered rollout in effect here. A branded assistant in MBUX—Mercedes’ approach—illustrates how one can draw on a general-purpose model without sacrificing the automaker’s unique experience design. Meanwhile, while more slow-and-steady in terms of feature rollouts than Ram or Ford’s approach with the latest trucks — and not to mention how slow these OEMs are compared to Tesla, Rivian, et al. — Google’s ecosystem play means that over time, more makes, mixes of trims should see similar capabilities as those from rivals like Ram, especially when drivers opt for factory infotainment or smartphone projection, themselves having little drive-time influence on their choice.

Part of a broader shift in the connected cabin

The demo also highlights a larger trend in the tech industry: assistants are evolving from voice dialers to orchestrators. While it could do more than guide and recommend things, the same architecture might learn to summarize calendar events, recommend a better departure time based on traffic, or adjust in-cabin settings when cued by conversational input.

S&P Global Mobility has observed that even cars equipped with capable infotainment are often relegated to the default of smartphone mirroring in order to make using systems more “shoppable.” In order to change that behavior, the embedded system has to be quicker, more accurate, and less fussy than a phone. One of the only things that can really tip the scales back to the dashboard on CQS is a conversational model with infinite context.

Safety, privacy, and the way forward for smart cars

Safety is the non-negotiable. And research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has found that complex infotainment tasks can distract drivers for dozens of seconds — a period of time for which they should have had their eyes on the road, particularly at highway speeds. The potential of a smarter assistant is to reduce glance time and cognitive load by allowing drivers to ask one question, get exactly what they need, and stop poking screens.

Evaluators will also continue to examine data stewardship. Mercedes has made data governance a central part of its software strategy, and automakers increasingly favor hybrid approaches that leave sensitive vehicle signals local while offloading heavy language processing to the cloud. Look for clearer disclosures about what is processed in the vehicle, versus processing that’s done in the cloud, and how personal data are safeguarded.

For now, the summary is simple: The Gemini demo at the CLA seems to represent a tangible leap from legacy assistants. It mixes Maps-grade data, conversational memory, and frictionless action into something you can actually use while you’re driving. If Mercedes and Google can deliver that experience at scale — and do it fast, in private, safely — it could reset expectations about the way drivers talk to their cars.
