Software AG's ADABAS D will be first full-function database available on Caldera's Linux operating system; Leading price/performance, easy-to-use RDBMS now available for the popular Caldera network desktop
Business Wire, March 14, 1996
HANOVER, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 14, 1996--Software AG, a leading developer of client/server application development software, today announced that its easy-to-use relational database management system (RDBMS), ADABAS D, will be the first full-function database to run natively on the Linux-based Caldera Network Desktop. Software AG's ADABAS D, paired with the increasingly popular and robust Linux operating system, offers developers a proven, low-cost and easy-to-use 32-bit platform for developing applications that range from client/server environments to the Internet.
ADABAS D will be shipped as part of the Caldera Solutions CD, and will provide Linux users with a robust, easily administered, reorganization-free database engine for creating applications and Internet/Intranet environments. The Caldera Solutions CD is a collection of third party software developed for or ported to Linux by members of Caldera's Independent Vendor Partner Program. The CD-ROM will be shipped with every copy of the Caldera Network Desktop 1.0.
The Caldera Network Desktop is based on Linux, a robust flavor of UNIX, and augmented it with client and server Internet and network tools, backup utilities, and a GUI shell. The Network Desktop is a fully graphical Linux environment for authoring, navigating, and publishing information on the Internet and private Intranets. Value Added Resellers (VARs) will be able to use Caldera's Network Desktop and Software AG's ADABAS D to easily develop applications without spending extra time performing database administration.
"We are very excited about partnering with Caldera, and look forward to building a strong, long-term relationship between our two companies," said Philippe Kuperman, Senior Vice President of Indirect Sales for Software AG. "We are particularly interested in Caldera's sales model, which promotes third-party vendor sales through mainstream channel partners."
Software AG's ADABAS D is an open, easy-to-administer RDBMS that offers database replication, two-phase commit and both Oracle and DB2 compatibility modes. It features the industry's most aggressive pricing for a relational database product, and is the first relational database to offer the same low price across all platforms. In August 1995, Software AG set an industry precedent by setting the same price for both its UNIX and Windows NT versions of ADABAS D.
"ADABAS D and Caldera are a natural match," said Mike Schiff, Director of Software AG's Data Management Program. "We're pairing an easy-to-use, low-cost database with the easy-to-use, low-cost Linux operating environment. What could be better?"
"Software AG's ADABAS D provides the strength and functionality of a powerful database, and can be an ideal, high-level development environment for resellers and users of the Caldera Network Desktop," said Bryan Sparks, President of Caldera, Inc.
Trial licenses and purchase options for ADABAS D will be available on the Caldera Solutions CD through Caldera's Channel Partners during the second quarter of 1996.
