Reddit rolls out publisher tools to bring a sense of community, involving tracking and sharing

Reddit is introducing a new set of free resources designed to help publishers track how their content is shared across the platform — and find out where to submit theirs next. The features reside within Reddit Pro, the company’s suite for organizations, and are intended to make the site’s vast conversation graph actionable as distribution intelligence.

What’s new in Reddit Pro

The upgrade revolves around a Links tab which has three main features. For starters, article insights reveal the places on Reddit and engagement metrics like views, upvotes and clicks that a story has been posted. Second, publishers can synchronize RSS feeds so new articles stream into a share-ready dashboard. Third, Reddit is leveraging AI to recommend applicable communities (subreddits) where a piece is expected to take off, given its topic and past engagement history.

Crucially, Reddit is pitching this as advice, not as a shortcut. Community rules still determine what gets posted where, and moderators are still the ultimate authority. The prospect here is efficiency: less guesswork about where audiences are already talking about a topic, and a clearer sense of what actually does move conversation and traffic.

Early partners and access

Reddit says it has tested the tools in alpha with a few newsrooms, including The Atlantic, The Hill, NBC News and The Associated Press. With the beta access launching, we hope more publishers can pipe their feeds into Reddit Pro, track a performance thread of articles, and experiment with the AI community recommenders.

Reader experience: a lift, but for whom?

On the consumer end, Reddit is easing the transition from articles to discussion. Rather than booting readers to a standalone in-app browser where they’d need to scroll past the comment thread, the app will let us more easily open a link and instantly swipe back to see or add comments on the original post. That small UX tweak makes a difference: the fewer taps, the more likely participation — and stronger signals for both publishers and communities.

Reddit’s increasing centrality in news discovery

Publishers have long regarded Reddit as a high-intent discovery channel, especially for explainer journalism, investigative work and verticals with rich expert communities. Newsroom analytics teams and third-party firms alike have noticed that Reddit’s share of social referrals has increased while other platforms focus on private messaging or deprioritize news. By meeting publishers with insights, Reddit is formalizing a relationship that has been historically organic and community-led.

Scale also plays a role. In filings with the public markets, Reddit disclosed more than 70 million daily active users and hundreds of thousands of active communities — a sign that conversations on news topics are broad and deep. The new tools are meant to turn that ambient chat into concrete results for publishers: where a link appeared and how it did and how to reach an audience like that with the next piece.

Metrics readjustment: from members to active visitors

In addition to the Pro updates, Reddit will replace traditional member counts with a seven-day “by the thousands” visitor figure and the number of contributions in that time. For publishers, it’s a nice little upgrade. Active visitors and contributions provide a more accurate proxy for current engagement than dormant subscriber totals, and they help teams prioritize where to share a story, when timelines are tight.

How newsrooms can leverage this

From a practical standpoint, the workflow has a simple appearance: connect an RSS feed, read article insights showing which subreddits naturally picked up a piece, and automatically use AI suggestions to direct future shares—always within the rules of each community. Teams can add on typical analytics practices, such as UTM parameters, for example, in order to correlate Reddit performance with onsite goals like time-on-page or newsletter sign-ups.

Expect experimentation. An investigations desk could find, for example, that long-form explainers generate more cross-posting in expert communities than quick updates. A science team might learn that visuals and lay summaries lead to more upvotes in method-centric subreddits. Reddit’s advantage is that it tracks not just conversation quality but also click-through, rather than vanity metrics.

Why this move now

Reddit has made no secret of wanting to improve search and make it as easy as possible for people to find authoritative conversations. Better publisher tools can help with that too: better posts in the right communities lead to better search results both on-platform and increasingly in web search, where Reddit threads often rank high in search results. For publishers, that alignment might mean steadier traffic from the home page and richer feedback loops between publishers and audience.

The unresolved questions are familiar ones: How well can A.I. link stories to communities, can moderators deal with a surge in links that are submitted and can publishers find the right line between participating in a conversation and promoting their work? If the incentives are right, these tools could turn the platform into a more predictable, high-signal channel for newsroom distribution — while preserving the community norms that make it valuable in the first place.
