Microsoft hires Anthropic to improve Word, Excel’s AI

Microsoft is importing Anthropic’s Claude models into Word and Excel, The Information reports, pinging demand for the company’s proprietary language technology and underlining a pragmatic, multi-model approach to Microsoft 365’s Copilot. It’s not a breakup, but it’s far away from “integrated” and is a clear step toward model diversification within flagship productivity apps.

Why Microsoft is blending models

Copilot depends on speed, accuracy and cost at enterprise scale. Few tasks have only one “best” model: from rewriting a five-page policy word, to generating nested formulas and data classifications in Excel. This allows Microsoft to trade off factors like latency, reliability and cost per request by routing prompts to different providers while the user interface remains the same.

There is also a money-making logic. Copilot for Microsoft 365 is $30 a user, a month, and inference cost is a leading indicator that developers now obsess over for AI-powered software. Using a combination of models like this — breaking out smaller, lower latency systems to handle average requests and keeping the higher order reasoning back to work on more difficult prompts — can materially move the margin needle while improving the perception of quality.

And yes, Microsoft already does orchestrate multiple models across its stack, from its in-house small language models to third party systems through Azure AI, from a technical standpoint. In my opinion, extending that playbook from dev tools out to Microsoft 365 is a sign that a reported philosophy is not only maturing but that it is being modeled as a product strategy, and not simply as an offering of a cloud marketplace.

What Anthropic adds to Microsoft 365

Anthropic’s Claude family is distinguished for its long-context processing, instruction-following, and cautious safety posture defined by the company’s “constitutional AI” strategy. Practically, that ought to make it easier to work with sprawling documents, multi-step reasoning inside of spreadsheets, and enterprise-worthy tone control — jobs where consistency matters as much as a little bit of creative flair.

Internal Microsoft testing found Anthropic’s latest Claude Sonnet 4 outperformed OpenAI’s latest models on some Microsoft 365 workflows, according to The Information. Performance is mixed depending on the task but Task specific leaderboards, like LMSYS Chatbot Arena, have consistently ranked Claude models near the top for complicated writing and reasoning tasks, and reviewers still [makes mention of] how well Claude models followed instructions on business ones.

For users, the change will most likely be incremental, not radical: faster summaries in Word, more accurate table extraction, cleaner rewrite suggestions and steadier formula generation in Excel. Behind the scenes, model routing and fallback behavior will evolve and we will be handling more document-heavy prompts, and we would likely still use OpenAI models or Microsoft models to cover other scenarios.

It’s still a strategic bet: Microsoft’s investment in OpenAI — widely reported to be at more than $13 billion since 2019 — is still a strategic one. But both have been pushing for independence. Industry reports have speculated that OpenAI was working on custom chips with the chip company Broadcom, running experiments using Google Cloud for some of its workloads, and recent governance changes as it considers a Public Benefit Corporation structure. And, all the while, Microsoft is adding more models to its roster across Azure AI supporting systems from providers including Meta, Mistral and Cohere.

And when viewed from this angle, the Anthropic deal looks as much like a form of risk management as it resembles drama. Depending on multiple top-tier models mitigates risk of supply concentration into Microsoft’s system, allows them to get leverage in pricing and performance, and allows Microsoft to manage the fit to product inside Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

Implications for customers and the AI ecosystem

Enterprises can expect more even results that may have lower latency, particularly with longer or more technical documents. It’s argued by Microsoft that customer data from Microsoft 365 tenants should not be used in order to train foundation models, which does matter as regulators and customers are now examining Training Data Provenance. Lawsuits throughout the industry will continue — litigation naming model providers over copyrighted text and lyrics, for example — putting pressure on vendors to document sources, licenses and safety mitigations.

Operationally, a multi-model Copilot provides IT teams with additional choices for governance, regional data routing, and resilience. If one provider throttles capacity or alters terms, Microsoft can shift traffic. It’s certainly clear to AI developers and ISVs – the office suite is fast becoming a battleground, where accuracy, controllability and overall cost of ownership will dictate winners.

The bottom line: Microsoft’s decision to integrate Anthropic into Word and Excel is a vote for use case–specific AI rather than a one-size-fits-all allegiance. OpenAI will continue to be a key player in Microsoft’s AI narrative, but the company is increasingly saying that for Who Has The Best Model For The Job In Microsoft 365 it’s whoever builds it.
