The company’s Gemini-powered Nano Banana is the first Google image editor to consistently tweak the things you ask for without bulldozing all of the rest of it. And it also gave me a very realistic sunburn I did not want. Even still, after weeks of editing everything from watch swaps to landscape touch-ups, I am certain this is the right path for AI photo editing — warts and all.

The standout: precise, local edits. Previous AI tools tended to regenerate the entire frame if you wanted even small changes. Over the course of “Nano Banana,” Nano Banana pretty much remains itself — change the shirt, keep the background; tweak the water, leave his face alone — most of the time. It’s quick and consistent, and surprisingly nuanced when it manages to capture the context well — tinged with content-aware inpainting but driven by natural language.
Next to big-name counterparts — say, Photoshop’s Generative Fill or Canva’s Magic Edit — Nano Banana has the strength of psychosis. It usually respected composition and light direction in my testing, which is half the battle as far as believability is concerned. For simple color adjustments, accessory swaps or cleaning up distractions, it’s already a reliable daily use tool.
The Sunburn Mystery — and Other Oddities
Then there are the gremlins. With a normal warm-up of the scene, it bumped saturation and contrast so that there was just enough (color) to bake a red cast gently onto my checks. That “sunburn” effect is a predictable side effect of global color moves bleeding into skin tones, especially when the model balances foliage and sky first, then skin last.
Left-versus-right confusion cropped up, too. Requesting the tattoo on my left arm could often result in it appearing on my right until I specifically mentioned that I was asking for the subject’s left. Why Quality Can Diminish After a Lot of Tiny Edits

Nano Banana is not blemish-free: It may redden skin, confuse left for right and grapple with identity. But for quick, localized adjustments without destroying the integrity of a photo overall, it’s quite a step up. The wider market indicates a surging interest in AI editing — industry players tell of billions of AI-assisted gen- erations — and mainstream surveys from a group like Pew Research Center indicate that curiosity is outpacing hands-on experience. This kind of tool will close it.
I’ll continue using it for what it currently already does well: subtle, tasteful ones that you’d spend too much time doing by hand. Just don’t ask it for abs — or to let your complexion be after you heat up the room.
