Comcast announced June 29 that it plans to separate its connectivity operations from a media-and-entertainment company built around NBCUniversal and Sky. The proposed separation is expected to take roughly a year and remains subject to regulatory approvals and final board approval.
Under the plan, Peacock, NBC, Universal’s studios and theme parks, Telemundo, Bravo and Sky would sit within a separately traded media company, while Comcast would retain its residential and business connectivity operations, including broadband and wireless services. The announcement does not mean an immediate programming change, but it would give the entertainment assets their own corporate focus.
What would move into the NBCUniversal company
The proposed media company would include NBCUniversal and Sky. Its portfolio would encompass NBC and Telemundo; Peacock and Bravo; Universal film and television studios; Universal’s destinations and experiences business; and Sky. Comcast’s remaining business would concentrate on residential and business connectivity, including broadband and wireless services.
Comcast shareholders are expected to receive shares in both companies once the transaction is completed, according to Associated Press reporting. Comcast also expects to retain as much as a 19.9% stake in the NBCUniversal company for up to a year after the spinoff, then monetize that holding over time.
Mike Cavanagh, Comcast’s president, is expected to become chief executive of the NBCUniversal company. Michael Angelakis, a former Comcast chief financial officer who joined as a strategic adviser, is expected to become Comcast’s CEO after the separation. Brian Roberts, Comcast’s chairman and co-CEO, is expected to remain actively involved with both companies, as Reuters reporting described.
A second, distinct Comcast media restructuring
The announcement is Comcast’s second major media separation in less than two years, but the two transactions concern different groups of assets. In November 2024, Comcast said it would spin off a collection of cable networks and digital businesses into what became Versant. That separation was completed on Jan. 2, 2026, according to Comcast’s 2025 annual report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Versant holds the former Comcast cable-network and digital portfolio, including MS NOW, CNBC, USA Network, Golf Channel, E!, SYFY, Oxygen, Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes. The newly proposed company is not Versant: it would retain the NBC broadcast network, Peacock, the Universal studios and parks, Telemundo, Bravo and Sky. The distinction leaves the prospective NBCUniversal company with a mix of ad-supported television, streaming, filmed entertainment and location-based attractions rather than the former cable-network portfolio.
Comcast has not already completed the NBCUniversal and Sky separation. The June 29 announcement set out a plan and an anticipated timetable, and it remains conditional on approvals. The company has not announced a sale, merger, further breakup or partner for the new media business.
Strategy and open questions
Roberts said the technology and media businesses have distinct opportunities that are better pursued with dedicated focus, according to the AP report. Comcast has framed the split as a way for each company to operate with a more entrepreneurial management approach, rather than as the opening stage of a deal process. When asked about potential strategic transactions, Roberts said the separation was not intended as a step toward one, Reuters and the AP reported.
Analysts have said a stand-alone NBCUniversal might eventually become an acquisition target or have more latitude to pursue acquisitions itself. Those possibilities remain analyst assessment, not a declared outcome or an announced transaction. The media company would include consumer brands and businesses spanning broadcast television, streaming, filmed entertainment and destination attractions.
The market response reported on the day of the announcement varied by the point in the trading session being cited. Reuters described Comcast shares as up nearly 8%, while the AP described a gain of more than 6% around midday. Those figures reflect different snapshots of trading activity rather than competing closing prices.
The near-term work is to organize Peacock, NBC, Universal’s studios and parks, Telemundo, Bravo and Sky under the planned parent company, separate from Comcast’s U.S. connectivity operations. Comcast says it expects that structure to be in place in about a year, provided the required approvals and final board authorization are obtained.
