Microsoft is testing a new agentic AI feature for Windows called Copilot Actions, and it’s posing the fundamental question of whether you as a PC owner can trust an automated assistant to click, type, and page through your apps and files just like you would.
How Copilot Actions Work on Windows Systems
Copilot Actions is more than a chatbot in a sidebar. It is meant to do things on your computer across the entire system — by visually understanding what’s happening onscreen and performing steps as a human would, such as arranging files, updating documents, or booking reservations. Consider it a digital coworker that can carry out orders rather than just make suggestions.
For now, Microsoft is keeping it to Windows Insider builds only and has also hidden the feature behind an “Experimental agentic features” toggle in Settings > System > AI components > Agent tools. It does not work by itself, and you have to explicitly turn it on. That position suggests that Microsoft is aware the stakes are much higher than with a typical preview.

Microsoft executives have talked up a layered design. Agents need to be digitally signed by a trusted source, like executable apps, so Microsoft can revoke bad actors if necessary. The agent lives under an ephemeral standard account that is provisioned only when the feature is enabled and doesn’t run with your admin privileges.
By default, you’re limited to a few well-known folders — Documents, Downloads, Desktop, and Pictures — and the agent functions within its own insulated “Agent workspace” with its desktop entirely separate. Anything beyond that must be granted access. The company says users can have access revoked at any time and that the agent cannot change anything in the system without action from a user.
Microsoft’s Dana Huang, leader of Windows Security, focused on agentic-specific threats like cross-prompt injection — where a malicious document or UI can convince an agent to exfiltrate data or install unapproved software. She described the permissions model as a guardrail to protect against that possibility.
Microsoft is red-teaming Copilot Actions internally, with security researchers trying to break both the model and the container around it. The company also says there will be more granular privacy and security controls before any wide release, which is clearly a lesson learned from previous mistakes.
Where Copilot Actions Could Go Awry in Real Use
Agentic AI brings us into new forms of failure beyond ordinary bugs. Cross-prompt injection might override the instructions in ways not easily apparent; a spreadsheet macro or web page tooltip could sneak an instruction under the nose of the user. The OWASP Top 10 for Large Language Models lists prompt injection and data leakage as two of the most critical concerns for LLM-based tools, and these risks are exacerbated when an entity can take actions.
Then there is the more mundane but no less lethal instance of errant confidence. In the case of desktop apps, small errors can have large consequences when credentials are already loaded.
Supply chain trust also remains a challenge. Code signing prevents a lot of threats, but it’s not perfect; certificates get revoked and vendors get compromised. Isolation does make a difference, but once permissions are given, the data can move fast. How to Test Copilot Actions Safely on Your PC
If you’re an Insider who can’t wait to test Copilot Actions, start with a noncritical machine and leave that feature off on systems where you do sensitive work. Give as little access to a folder for a task as needed and remove it immediately after. Treat the agent as a contractor who only needs just-in-time access, not as a permanent colleague with blanket permissions.
Use test or fake data to experiment. If you want to check that it drafts emails, test with a sandbox first. For document changes, paste files in a test folder and not your master archives. And watch the on‑screen steps the agent is taking — visibility is your best early warning system.
Enterprises should pilot within a closely monitored ring, use endpoint monitoring to identify abnormal process behavior, and base evaluations on frameworks from NIST and MITRE ATLAS. Explicitly test for command injection, attempt to exfiltrate data, and exploit privilege creep; “bake in” these findings into policy before you roll it out more widely.

Copilot Actions might not only meaningfully help Windows but also its owners — being able to actually make stuff happen with AI, instead of just talk. But trust isn’t promised; it’s earned. Microsoft’s opt‑in model, isolation approach, and signed agents look positive, though the company needs its own red‑teaming for when things do (not if) break.
