One document cited by the whistleblowers describes a policy playbook that explicitly recommends avoiding certain trigger phrases in write-ups that might heighten legal exposure.

If a study can only conclude that a feature “may pose risk” instead of stating that it “exposes minors to explicit contact,” teams responsible for product decisions and safeguards may not be empowered to respond with urgency. VR platforms under scrutiny
Most allegations focus on Meta’s social VR ecosystem. One test described in the filings allegedly showed that users with Black avatars encountered racist slurs within an average of 34 seconds of entering a space. If accurate, that metric indicates a moderation failure at the level of both detection and real-time enforcement—two capabilities VR platforms must get right because voice, presence, and proximity heighten the impact of abuse compared with text-only feeds.
Age-gating is also a flashpoint. Meta says its services are not intended for children under 13, yet researchers have long warned that self-attested ages and easily bypassed checks are inadequate in immersive environments. In parallel, Reuters has reported that internal AI policy drafts at Meta previously tolerated chatbots engaging in “romantic or sensual” conversations with minors—another example of how emerging features can outpace safeguards.
