Michael Bay is in early talks to direct a new Transformers movie, according to Paramount, while Steven Spielberg is expected to return as an executive producer with creative-direction oversight of the franchise. The reported arrangement would bring the director of the first five live-action films back into the orbit of one of Paramount’s largest screen properties, though no directing deal has been completed.
TheWrap reported on Oct. 6 that the prospective Bay film would be set in the present day and use a script by Jason Fuchs. The outlet also reported that Spielberg would oversee the creative direction of the Transformers intellectual property alongside longtime producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Plot details, casting and a release timetable were not disclosed.
What has changed in Bay’s possible return
The important qualifier is the stage of the deal. Paramount described Bay as being in early talks, not as a filmmaker already signed to direct. That leaves the project in a contingent phase, even as the reported involvement of Spielberg and di Bonaventura points to a broader effort to establish creative leadership around the property.
Bay directed the first five live-action Transformers features, beginning with 2007’s Transformers and ending with 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight. His potential return would therefore reconnect the franchise with the filmmaker most closely associated with its initial live-action run. The current report does not establish whether the new film would continue any earlier storyline or function as a fresh entry; its present-day setting is the only narrative detail publicly reported so far.
The development has progressed beyond an earlier, less-defined report about Bay’s interest. In June 2025, SFFGazette’s account of reporting by Puck said Bay had approached Paramount about returning as a hands-on producer and possible director, with Jordan VanDina then working on a script. The newer report identifies Fuchs as the writer on the script Bay would direct if talks result in a deal.
Available reporting does not say whether those writer credits reflect the same project at different points in development or separate Bay-related concepts. What can be established is narrower: a possible Bay return was reported in 2025, and Paramount has now said he is in early discussions to direct a Fuchs-scripted film. Treating the two reports as proof of one uninterrupted production path would go beyond what has been made public.
Spielberg’s reported role is franchise-wide, not directing
Spielberg’s role is also distinct from Bay’s. He is not reported to be directing the proposed film. Rather, TheWrap said he will serve as an executive producer and share oversight of the IP’s creative direction with di Bonaventura. In practical terms, that places Spielberg’s reported involvement at the franchise level, while Bay’s potential job is tied to a specific feature that remains in negotiations.
The two filmmakers have a long history with the series, though their earlier public comments suggest a more complicated backdrop than a simple reunion narrative. In 2022, Bay said Spielberg had advised him to stop making Transformers movies after three installments, according to an 8days.sg report on Bay’s interview remarks. Bay ultimately directed five. That anecdote is historical context, not evidence of the current project’s creative dynamics, which neither Paramount nor the current report has detailed.
The reported Spielberg-di Bonaventura arrangement also separates stewardship of the overall brand from the slate’s individual productions. Paramount is pursuing more than one route for the property: TheWrap said Derek Connolly is writing a separate Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover. Nothing in the report identifies that crossover as Bay’s film, and the projects should not be conflated.
A developing slate, with major decisions still unresolved
For Paramount and Hasbro, which TheWrap identified as producers of the prospective film, the update signals an attempt to organize a major franchise around recognizable creative names while retaining room for multiple projects. Bay’s first five films form a clearly defined 2007-to-2017 stretch; the new talks concern a proposed future entry rather than a confirmed return to production.
Several central details remain unknown. There is no announced title, no disclosed cast and no indication of when cameras might roll. TheWrap separately reported that Shia LaBeouf will not return, but no broader casting plan has been revealed. Nor has the studio explained how a present-day Bay film might relate to the crossover in development.
For now, the firmest update is the one Paramount gave to TheWrap: Bay is in early talks to direct a present-day Transformers film from a Jason Fuchs script, while Spielberg is reported to join di Bonaventura in overseeing the franchise’s creative direction.
