Finance has just asked why the cloud bill crept up again, and nobody on your team can point to the line item responsible. There isn’t one, because backup spend hides inside snapshot storage, cross-region transfer, and the compute you spin up to restore.
Or your backup contract renews in 90 days and the account team has started booking calls. Either way, the trigger that sent you looking at the leading enterprise backup platforms should decide your shortlist, because each one points to a different winner.

Want the highlights first? Here they are:
Eon is the best of the leading enterprise backup platforms when the trigger is cloud bill shock or a recovery that took too long, because its cloud data protection and recovery cuts backup storage cost by 30–50% and rolls back individual records in minutes.
Rubrik fits a ransomware scare at a security-led shop, Commvault fits a slow SAP or Oracle recovery, and Cohesity fits a renewal on a large legacy data center.
Veeam answers a hypervisor migration, Druva answers endpoint and SaaS sprawl, and Dell PowerProtect answers a Data Domain hardware refresh.
| Platform | Typical trigger it answers | Deployment model | Pricing (as of Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eon | Bill shock, slow recovery | SaaS, one read-only role | Usage-based, per GB per month |
| Rubrik | A ransomware scare | Clusters on-prem; hosted or managed in cloud | Quote only |
| Commvault | Slow SAP or Oracle recovery | Self-run or Commvault-managed | Front-end TB capacity, quote |
| Cohesity | Data-center contract renewal | Cohesity-, partner-, or customer-managed | Quote; 1-, 3-, or 5-year terms |
| Veeam | Hypervisor migration | Self-run software, plus Veeam Vault | Per workload; Vault from $14/TB/mo |
| Druva | Endpoint and SaaS sprawl | Fully managed SaaS | Per TB after dedup, or per user |
| Dell PowerProtect | Data Domain refresh | Appliances, plus a SaaS option | Quote only |
Which buying trigger are you solving for?
Most backup evaluations start with one of four events, and each rewards a different platform.
- Bill shock. Backup costs are growing faster than the data, and nobody can attribute them to a workload. You need resource-level cost visibility and incremental storage.
- A failed or slow recovery. A restore took a day when the business expected an hour, or it rebuilt a whole instance to fix a few hundred corrupted rows.
- A renewal. The contract window is the cheapest moment to move, since you aren’t paying two vendors at once.
- A migration. You’re leaving a hypervisor, a data center, or a legacy backup provider, and the next platform should fit where workloads are headed.
1. Eon: for bill shock and slow recoveries
The founding team built CloudEndure before AWS acquired it, and the platform deploys from a single read-only role with no agents, appliances, or clusters to run.
Pick it when: Most of your production data lives on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and the problem is spend you can’t explain or restores that take too long.
What you get: Forever-incremental backups and cloud-native deduplication inside an immutable, logically air-gapped vault, which is where the lower storage cost comes from. Cost Explorer breaks backup spend down by account, service, and resource.
Recovery goes down to the file, table, or record, so you restore the rows that were hit without rebuilding the environment. NETGEAR left a legacy backup provider for it, cut backup storage cost by 35%, and saw a 10 TB SQL Server restore drop from 24 hours to under three.
Price signal: Usage-based, billed per GB per month for the storage you back up, with flexible spending commitments and no public list price (as of October 2026).
Honest drawback: On-prem coverage is partial[a], so an estate that is still mostly on-prem is a harder fit, and the reference list is shorter than the incumbents’. G2 reviewers also flag dense job lists at scale.
2. Rubrik: for a ransomware scare
Rubrik treats recovery as a security problem, and its Preemptive Recovery engine tracks identity access during standard backups.
Pick it when: An incident or near-miss has put security in charge of the backup decision, and the estate still has a large on-prem footprint.
What you get: Threat Monitoring checks backups for indicators of compromise using Mandiant and Rubrik Zero Labs intelligence, with the caveat that file-based scanning only works where there are files, which a managed database like Aurora or RDS doesn’t expose.
Price signal: Quote-based, with no public price list as of October 2026.
Honest drawback: Cloud protection comes customer-hosted, where you own networking and IAM, or as Rubrik Managed, which moves data outside your AWS organization by design. Backups also sit in a proprietary format.
3. Commvault: for a slow application recovery
When the restore that went badly was an SAP or Oracle system, start with Commvault’s application depth.
Pick it when: An SAP or Oracle recovery dragged because the backup couldn’t bring the database back in a consistent state.
What you get: SAP-certified protection, Oracle RAC and Exadata coverage, recovery down to a tablespace or single data file, plus Commvault Cleanroom for testing recovery in an isolated environment.
Price signal: No public dollar pricing as of October 2026, and self-managed licenses are capacity-based on front-end terabytes.
Honest drawback: Application consistency depends on agents installed on source and target machines. AirGap’s locking behavior also varies by storage target, so get it confirmed in writing.
4. Cohesity: for a data-center renewal
Cohesity absorbed Veritas’s enterprise data protection business in December 2024, and it’s built its pitch around continuity.
Pick it when: The renewal covers a large Veritas-era estate and you’d like to keep it running while you decide what to modernize.
What you get: A commitment to support both companies’ existing products for years, delivery that can be Cohesity-, partner-, or customer-managed, and FortKnox clean room recovery, generally available since September 22, 2026.
Price signal: Quote-based as of October 2026, with Core and Enterprise editions on 1-, 3-, or 5-year subscriptions.
Honest drawback: Threat hunting and cyber recovery orchestration are Enterprise-only, and cyber vaulting costs extra in both editions.
5. Veeam: for a hypervisor migration
A hypervisor change forces a backup decision whether you planned one or not, and Veeam handles that transition well.
Pick it when: You’re moving VMs between vSphere, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, or Proxmox VE and want the license to follow the workload.
What you get: The Veeam Universal License, which is portable across virtual, physical, and cloud workloads, plus Veeam Vault storage that’s immutable by default.
Price signal: Per-workload licensing with no published workload price, and Veeam Vault from $14 per TB per month on Foundation (as of October 2026).
Honest drawback: Microsoft 365, Salesforce, and Kasten need separate licenses. Outside Veeam Vault, immutability is yours to configure.
6. Druva: for endpoint and SaaS sprawl
Druva’s Resilience Cloud is fully managed SaaS, built for data scattered across laptops, SaaS apps, and identity providers.
Pick it when: Unprotected endpoints and SaaS apps keep piling up, and you have no appetite for running backup infrastructure.
What you get: A per-user SaaS Universal License covering Salesforce, Dynamics 365, and identity sources such as Entra ID and Okta.
Price signal: No dollar figures published as of October 2026, and infrastructure plans are priced per TB per month after deduplication.
Honest drawback: Anomaly detection and curated cyber recovery are paid add-ons, even on Elite. Druva’s AWS support matrix (October 2025) also lists RDS Cluster backup and restore as unsupported.
7. Dell PowerProtect: for a Data Domain refresh
If the trigger is aging Data Domain hardware, staying with Dell keeps your deduplication and vault design intact.
Pick it when: Your primary storage is PowerStore, PowerMax, or PowerScale and an appliance refresh is due.
What you get: Native protection for Dell arrays, Data Domain deduplication (Dell cites typical 75:1 reduction on larger models, from its own testing), and an isolated Cyber Recovery vault.
Price signal: Quote-based, with no list prices on the product pages as of October 2026.
Honest drawback: The stack centers on appliances you deploy and run, and Retention Lock modes need separate licenses per MTree. It’s the right call for a Dell data center and a hard one to justify for a cloud-first team.
One request that sorts the shortlist
Whatever trigger started the search, ask every vendor the same thing: restore one table from last Tuesday, live, on the call, and let you time it.
The vendors who can do it will agree quickly (and the ones who need two weeks to prepare have answered the question already). The time it takes, and how much else comes back with that table, tells you more than any feature matrix.
FAQ
What triggers an enterprise backup platform change?
The usual triggers are a cloud bill that keeps rising without a clear cause, a recovery that failed or ran far longer than expected, a contract renewal, or a migration off a hypervisor or data center. Each one points to a different shortlist.
Is switching backup vendors mid-contract worth it?
It can be when the current platform has already failed a real recovery or can’t protect where your workloads are moving. Otherwise, pilot replacements in the months before renewal so you aren’t paying for two platforms at once.
How do backup costs show up on a cloud bill?
Rarely as their own line, because backup spend is spread across snapshot storage, cross-region data transfer, and the compute used for restores. Resource-level cost attribution is how you see what each workload’s protection costs.
“Eon doesn’t support on-prem workloads at all, so “partial” is inaccurate. Suggest: “Eon’s on-prem support is limited, so an estate that’s still mostly on-prem needs a separate tool for the data center.”
