American consumers rely almost entirely on imported furniture, with domestic production representing only a fraction of the total market supply. Just as in Europe, furniture manufacturing industry is dominated by large monopolies such as IKEA and Costco. The only real competition they face comes from China, which has virtually unlimited production capacity: the United States is the largest importer of Chinese upholstered furniture, accounting for roughly a third of all exports in that category. These corporations fill warehouses and showrooms with furniture that looks identical and wears out quickly. Competing with giants on production volume makes little sense, and there is no real need to. Instead, local manufacturers can focus on offering customers something mass factory production simply cannot provide: quality built to last for decades.
Oleh Halkin, a Ukrainian entrepreneur, founder and CEO of G.O.V. Elysium, has been putting this idea into practice in the American market for two years now. He manufactures upholstered furniture and kitchen systems based on his own designs, rather than following trends set by industry giants and focusing instead on how his furniture will actually be used by its owners. He is convinced that small independent manufacturers play a critical role in the domestic economy and a genuine alternative for consumers. From the Ukrainian Market to American Manufacturing
Oleh entered the American market as an experienced entrepreneur with a proven track record in production and operations. In Ukraine, his furniture was sold in the country’s largest furniture retail chains, and he had established partnerships with retailers in Moldova and Romania.
“I started the manufacturing business in 2013, and at first I did everything on my own, but as demand grew, so did the number of employees. On average, 60 to 70 people were working in the 3,600-square-meter production facility. On average, we completed around 200 orders a month, including sofas, armchairs, and kitchen systems, our furniture could be found in the country’s largest hypermarkets and furniture stores. ” the entrepreneur says. “What allowed me to reach that number was using furniture configurations of my own design. Rather than working from a few standard sizes, I designed functional pieces that could adapt to homes of different sizes.”
Modularity Instead of Uniformity
Now working in a new country, Mr. Halkin builds furniture based on the principles of modular architecture, drawing on his own engineering developments. Among his creations is a three module-sofa system that allows the size and function to change and can convert into four different sleeping configurations. The middle module folds out into two full-size sleeping surfaces, while removable armrests save usable space. His kitchen systems feature concealed touch lighting, bidirectional soft-close mechanisms, illuminated vertical display racks for dishware, and a system of concealed pocket doors for appliances that keeps countertops clear. Beyond structural modularity, the company creates decorative and expressive statement pieces using composite materials—combining epoxy resin with wood, stone, metal, and glass. All of this is manufactured using eco-friendly materials that are also resistant to impact, moisture, temperature changes, and wear.
According to Halkin, models offered by industry giants are produced in uniform batches with materials that can lose their appearance and functionality within a few years. G.O.V. Elysium takes a different approach: customers get furniture that lasts a long time and, thanks to its modular design, fits into a space of any size.
“By using premium hardware for our kitchens and a combination of premium fillings for our sofas, we still manage to stay within the mid-price segment. We are already seeing demand for this among young families and homebuilders, who order in large batches,” he adds.
How One Company Is Strengthening the Local Economy
Today, G.O.V. Elysium Co LLC operates out of Spartanburg, South Carolina with six employees. The company works with three local suppliers of wood and fabric, further supporting the regional supply chain. Among them are Ultrapan, Roccabinetry and Richelieu America. Next year, Halkin plans to expand production capacity to reach sales of 100 units a month, and by 2030, to 500 units a month, with revenue of 1.5 to 2.5 million dollars monthly. This growth will require additional jobs and bringing on more partners. The experience and business model Oleh brought over from Ukraine allowed him to scale production without relying on government grants or subsidies, based entirely on the product’s market competitiveness.
“When consumers get the chance to buy durable, technologically advanced, and eco-friendly furniture from a local manufacturer, everyone benefits. The customer gets a quality product that lasts for decades, and the local economy gets a new production boost,” Mr. Halkin comments. Highlighting the company’s growth trajectory, Mr. Halkin’s business partner Inna Dolia, owner of her furniture manufacturing, notes:
“Working alongside Oleh, I witnessed how his uncompromising standards elevate the expectations for the entire team and our partners. Moreover, scaling a production business in a new market requires a rare combination of operational discipline and strategic vision. Oleh Halkin, by bringing an already tested manufacturing model from Ukraine to the USA and building local supply chains, proved that he possesses such qualities”.
Raising Quality Standards in Furniture Manufacturing
Oleh Halkin recalls how his products have shifted client expectations of what quality furniture should look like: “Even though our company is oriented toward wholesale buyers, we regularly received requests specifically for this kind of modular configuration. That told us our work filled an unmet need in the market, and that end consumers responded positively to the innovations.”
He is convinced that as the company’s scale grows, so will its influence on the industry as a whole. Over time, sustained innovation is one of the primary drivers that can shift quality standards in the industry.
These small producers certainly won’t replace the industry’s giants, but their contribution is tangible all the same: new jobs, a longer lasting product for consumers, and a local manufacturing sector strengthened from within.
