Blackstone has told investors it now expects Anthropic to receive a double-B-range credit rating after the artificial-intelligence company’s proposed initial public offering, according to a Financial Times report relayed by TechCrunch. The reported view is significant because it would place Anthropic in speculative grade rather than investment grade as the company seeks capital to support large computing commitments.
The important qualification is that Anthropic has not been issued such a rating in the available public record. The reported assessment is Blackstone’s expectation of what established rating agencies could conclude after an IPO, not a published decision by S&P Global Ratings, Moody’s Ratings or Fitch Ratings. Anthropic and Blackstone declined TechCrunch’s requests for comment, leaving the underlying investor communication unconfirmed by either company.
A forecast tied to financing, not a rating decision
The Financial Times account, as described by TechCrunch on Oct. 30, said Blackstone shared its revised expectation with investors in a reported $63 billion arrangement to finance Anthropic’s chips. The figure and the details of Blackstone’s outlook should therefore be understood as reported, rather than as terms confirmed by the companies.
According to that account, Blackstone had previously expected Anthropic to achieve an investment-grade rating before 2027. It now expects a rating in the double-B range, which TechCrunch described as the upper tier of speculative grade. In broad credit-market practice, the divide between investment grade and speculative grade can shape both the pool of investors able to buy a company’s debt and the return lenders demand for taking risk.
That does not establish how much more Anthropic would pay to borrow. Pricing depends on the structure of any financing, collateral, cash flow, debt seniority, market conditions and the final opinion of any ratings agency. Nor does a projected double-B rating say that a company cannot raise substantial funding. It indicates that prospective creditors may view repayment risk as materially higher than for issuers considered investment grade.
For Anthropic, the issue comes as AI developers and their infrastructure partners commit large sums to processors, data centers and the electricity needed to run them. Those commitments can be funded in several ways, including equity, project finance, leases and debt. A formal rating, if the company seeks one, would give lenders and bond investors a standardized framework for judging its obligations. Blackstone’s reported change in expectation suggests that the anticipated capital structure and business risks are being reassessed as those commitments expand.
The IPO itself remains proposed
Anthropic’s own newsroom says Anthropic, PBC filed a Form S-1 registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed offering of Class A common stock. An S-1 filing is an important step toward a listing, but it is not completion of an IPO. The offering’s timing, size and ultimate terms remain subject to the registration process and market conditions.
That status also explains why the reported credit view is explicitly post-IPO. An offering could change the company’s equity base, public disclosures and financing options, all of which may be relevant to a future rating analysis. But neither the filing nor Blackstone’s reported expectation is equivalent to an agency’s published assessment.
The distinction is more than semantic in this case. A company can have market commentary about its likely credit standing without having a public issuer rating, and a debt transaction can be arranged using private lender diligence rather than a broadly disseminated rating. Investors should not read the report as evidence that Anthropic has already received speculative-grade debt financing or that any particular agency has begun, completed or announced a review.
An earlier startup assessment is not comparable
Some confusion has arisen from a separate Oct. 16 item by finance.biggo.com, which said AIR Platforms assigned Anthropic an unsolicited BBB assessment. That item described AIR as a ratings startup that was not registered with the SEC as a Nationally Recognized Statistical Rating Organization.
The two reports do not directly conflict. AIR’s assessment was unsolicited and came from a different kind of provider; the Blackstone account concerns a forecast of how major agencies might rate Anthropic after a prospective public offering. They use different institutions, different analytical processes and different time frames. Treating AIR’s BBB label as a confirmed rating from a major credit-rating agency would overstate its significance.
There is also no basis in the available reports to infer that a major agency agrees with AIR, Blackstone or either report’s characterization of Anthropic’s finances. No published rating action by S&P, Moody’s or Fitch has been identified. A formal decision would ordinarily identify the rated entity or securities, the grade, outlook and reasons supporting the judgment.
Why the reported shift matters
Blackstone’s reported move from an investment-grade expectation to a double-B expectation is consequential principally because of the scale of capital required for advanced AI infrastructure. If a formal rating ultimately falls below investment grade, Anthropic could face a narrower set of potential debt buyers and financing costs that are more sensitive to changes in investor appetite. That outcome is not assured: the reported forecast has not become an agency action, and Anthropic’s IPO has not been completed.
The next concrete markers will be any additional disclosures in Anthropic’s registration materials, final IPO terms and, if sought, a public rating report from a recognized agency. Until then, the available evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Blackstone was reported to have revised its expectation, while Anthropic’s actual post-IPO credit standing remains unresolved.
