This shift matters because coordinates alone aren’t enough anymore. Emergency crews need minute-by-minute flood extents down to specific blocks. City planners want centimeter-accurate models of bridges and tunnels. Farmers aim for plant-by-plant decisions. The new stack of geospatial tech is built to answer those questions at speed and scale, even when GPS fails or goes stale.

What “beyond GPS” really means
GPS and other global navigation satellite systems are remarkable for global positioning, but they weren’t designed to provide a real-time, 3D understanding of the environment. Signals degrade in urban canyons, tunnels, and dense forests; jamming and spoofing are rising threats; and consumer-grade accuracy often hovers around several meters. Next-gen mapping fills the gap by fusing geometry, semantics, and change over time. Standards bodies including OGC and ISO/TC 211 are shaping interoperable formats and metadata for provenance, while privacy regulators push for on-device redaction and strict access controls. Without verifiable lineage and bias checks in AI labeling, the most beautiful 3D model is just another unreliable map.
