Match Group active users fell 37% year over year and 48% of Gen Z deleted every dating app they had — while roughly 78% of Muslims continue to use online platforms to look for a spouse
The collapse in mainstream dating app usage is not a collapse in demand for relationships, according to Mizwaj (mizwaj.com), which argues the numbers describe something narrower: the failure of one specific mechanic.
Match Group — the owner of Tinder, Hinge and OkCupid — reported active users down 37% year over year in March 2026. Tinder’s paying users fell from 9.6 million to 8.8 million; Bumble’s revenue dropped 10% and its paying users 16%. Meanwhile 48% of Gen Z deleted every dating app they had over a single year, and that generation accounts for only about a quarter of dating-app users to begin with.
Set against that, a multi-country study found roughly 77.8% of Muslims use online matchmaking platforms in their search for a spouse — a figure that has not moved in the same direction.
Muslims did not leave online matchmaking, because they never joined it for entertainment. What is collapsing is infinite optionality, and that was never what somebody looking to marry was asking for.## Why the mechanic fails at this job
The swipe optimises for engagement: sessions, time in app, messages sent, renewals. In a product whose users want to leave successfully, that produces a strange incentive — the member who marries in five weeks and deletes their account registers as a loss, while the member who scrolls for three years registers as a win.
Two further costs compound it. Decision fatigue disguised as abundance means two hundred profiles do not make anyone two hundred times more likely to marry; they make the person in front of you statistically unlikely to be the best available, which is a corrosive frame for a marriage. And the practice-level problem — being too religious for one group and not religious enough for another — cannot be solved by a mechanic that ranks people by photograph.
What a marriage-intent product looks like

The Arab context makes it sharper
Demand for marriage in Arab societies is not in question; the ability to act on it is. The 2023 Saudi Youth Report found 65.3% of Saudis aged 15 to 34 are single. Median mahr in Saudi Arabia runs around SAR 50,000 against total wedding costs of SAR 150,000 to 300,000 — more than 22 months of median income for the mahr alone. In Egypt, a middle-class man has been estimated to need roughly 13 times his annual salary before he can marry.
When cost delays marriage by years, the last thing anybody needs is a product designed to extend the search. Shorten the distance to a serious conversation. That is the whole job.

What remains unresolved is whether the correction reaches Muslim platforms built on the same mechanics. Several of the largest were designed around the engagement loop that is now failing elsewhere, and their users report the same complaints — unanswered messages, subscriptions bought to read them, silence afterwards. On current evidence, the format is the variable, not the audience.
