Android’s new desktop mode just became part of the operating system in a new beta. Against that, a new “Universal cursor” toggle coming in Android 16 QPR2 lets you determine if your mouse can wander unimpeded between your phone and an external display, which eases one of the most frequent multi-monitor use complaints.
The Universal cursor:
When you dock an eligible Pixel and plug in a mouse, Android’s desktop mode today treats your phone and external monitor as a single, uninterrupted surface. Go ahead, hit the edge of one screen and the cursor floats onto the next. It’s slippery — that is, until you meander down that path and “accidentally” fall onto the phone while reaching for a minuscule UI element on the megasized screen.

The new toggle reverses that behavior. Keep it on for easy control with one mouse across both displays, or turn it off to lock the cursor to whatever screen you’re actively using. It’s the type of nitty gritty change that power users often take for granted in desktop operating systems.
Why it matters for desktop mode
Desktop mode is building on Android, and in the QPR1 builds we have the taskbar, freestyle windowing, and improved multi-display plumbing. But productivity hinges on predictability. Unintentional pointer hops slow you up, jackknife your presentations and may even bring about unwanted taps to your phone at just the worst times.
Cursor confinement is a feature as old as the desktop world for gaming, CAD work or any focus-heavy application. Bringing that level of control to Android helps close the gap between a “phone that can output to a monitor” and a platform you’d trust with long gaming sessions.
How to find it, and how it works
Enable is accessible hiding under Settings > Connected devices > External displays in the first Android 16 QPR2 beta. It’s turned on by default, so the seamless behavior that you’ve come to know and love is preserved by default, unless you opt out. Switch it off, and the mouse will no longer jump between screens when driven against an edge.
There is one side effect: disabling the Universal cursor also disables the display topology control, the menu option that allows you to ‘virtually’ swap which monitor is sitting in, say, the left or right position, in a multi-monitor setup. That’s a layout tool that serves no other purpose than determining (-): with screen-to-screen movement blocked, it collapses.

Android watcher Mishaal Rahman was the first to spotlight the arrival of the toggle in the first build of QPR2, and the fact is that while it’s a relatively small tweak, it has a huge impact for anybody working with a mouse and multiple screens.
A step toward a better big‑screen Android
Google has been gradually tweaking Android for larger screens — foldables, tablets and now phones attached to monitors. QPR1 brought a semi-coherent set of desktop; with QPR2, an experiemnt in user control that feels core to what we are doing. It’s also part of a larger ecosystem trend: more fancy Android phones are starting to support DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB‑C, which means more people can plug in and get a real desktop view.
Phone-as-PC setup usage stats are few and far between, but enterprise pilots and developer workflows are trying the waters.
Even small spots of friction — say, a cursor that starts to drift off course, even for just a few seconds — can mean the difference between a tidy demonstration and a tool you’ll never want to be without.
What still needs work
The Universal cursor isn’t a panacea. What Android’s desktop mode really lacks is better window snapping, more powerful keyboard shortcuts and more strident persistence of your desired app layouts across sessions. App developers must also work to refine the behavior of resizable windows and saving state for those windows when they are divided in multiple on the desktop.
Still, this setting is the magic middle ground; it keeps flexibility for those who prefer a unified interface, but it also grants precision to users who want each screen to be, well, its own screen. Look for it to launch alongside the stable QPR2 release, along with a liiiiittle less frustration — and a li’l more polish — to Android’s desktop aspirations.
