8 Alternatives to Veeam for 2026: Competitors Compared Side by Side

Veeam Data Platform lists on AWS Marketplace at $155, $189, or $227.50 per workload per year (Foundation, Advanced, or Premium, sold in 10-instance packs on 12-month contracts).

Each protected workload counts against that license, so as cloud estates multiply, more teams start pricing alternatives to Veeam.

Want the highlights first? Here they are:

For cloud-first AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud estates, the best alternative to Veeam is Eon: cloud-native data protection and recovery from one read-only role, with no appliances or worker instances, that restores the exact table or records that broke without a full rebuild.

If your estate is still mostly VMs in a data center, look at Commvault for SAP and Oracle, Rubrik for security-led cyber recovery, Cohesity for deep data-center footprints, and NAKIVO for cost-conscious virtualization teams.

Acronis fits MSPs and midmarket IT that want backup and endpoint security in one agent, Druva runs fully managed SaaS protection for endpoints and SaaS apps, and HYCU suits Nutanix-native estates with a long tail of SaaS apps.

Alternative	Licensing unit	Ransomware tooling	On-prem support
Eon	Per GB/month of protected storage	Detection (add-on), logically air-gapped vault	Limited
Commvault	Front-end TB, or SaaS per TB and VM pack	Threat Scan, Commvault Cleanroom	Yes, software or appliance
Rubrik	Edition subscription, quoted	Threat monitoring and hunting	Yes, Rubrik clusters
Cohesity	Capacity (TB), 1- to 5-year terms	Anomaly detection, FortKnox vault	Yes, certified platforms
NAKIVO	Per workload or per CPU socket	Backup malware scan, immutable repos	Yes, customer-installed
Acronis	Per device	Anti-malware, EDR, backup scanning	Yes, agent on each machine
Druva	Credits (TB-month), per user for SaaS	Threat Insights, Ransomware Detection	Yes, run as SaaS
HYCU	Per user for SaaS, quoted for infrastructure	R-Shield detection	Yes, Nutanix AHV

How I compared these Veeam competitors

Feature grids flatter everyone, so I judged each option on the five things that decide whether a switch survives its first real restore (and its first renewal):

• Licensing unit: workloads, devices, terabytes, or users, and how that count grows.
• What you run: appliances, controllers, or worker instances in your environment.
• Ransomware tooling: what gets scanned (files and VM images, or managed database contents).
• Restore granularity: whether a bad table comes back alone or drags a full volume along.
• On-prem reach: how much of the data center it still protects, since few estates move in one go.

1. Eon: cloud-native data protection for cloud-first AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud estates

The platform is cloud data protection and recovery from the team behind CloudEndure, and it connects through a single read-only IAM role with no agents, appliances, or clusters to deploy. If you’ve ever sized a Veeam appliance, you’ll feel that difference on day one.

Its Cloud Backup Posture Management (CBPM) layer continuously discovers resources as accounts change, classifies them (PII, PHI, and financial data), and applies backup policy without anyone babysitting tags.

Recovery goes as small as the damage: an instance, a database, a table, only the rows a SQL query matches, a file, or a MongoDB Atlas document. Global Search finds files and database records across backups in seconds, so the slow part of an incident stops being the hunt.

Copies sit in immutable, logically air-gapped vaults with time-bound access, so a stolen production key never reaches them.

Its ransomware detection is an add-on. It correlates multiple independent signals (such as row-count drops, schema changes, and ransom notes) into one weighted score, and the database version is in early access.

Pick it when: most of your protected data lives in AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud managed services, and the incidents that hurt are a bad deploy or an encrypted table, where rolling back the exact records hit in minutes beats mounting a whole volume.

Compared with Veeam: Veeam sells separate products for AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, and on AWS it runs a backup appliance plus temporary worker instances in your accounts. This platform covers all three clouds from one read-only role, so there’s nothing per cloud to size or patch.

Licensing: It’s usage-based, billed per GB per month on protected storage, with no tier ladder and flexible spending commitments. There are no retrieval, restore, or egress fees, and global deduplication in the vault delivers up to 50% lower cost.

Honest drawback: Its on-prem support is limited, so an estate that’s still mostly on-prem needs a separate tool for the data center. It doesn’t back up laptops, ransomware detection is priced as its own package, and there’s no public list price.

2. Commvault: application-aware protection for SAP, Oracle, and Exchange

Commvault Cloud is the pick when the estate includes systems that need application-aware handling, and you can run it as SaaS, as on-prem software, or as an integrated appliance.

Its SAP certification covers granular recovery from a full database down to a tablespace, a single data file, a control file, or an archive log. For AWS workloads, Commvault sells Clumio, which Commvault acquired in 2024, as its AWS-native line.

Pick it when: SAP, Oracle, and Exchange sit next to your VMs, and you want one vendor that knows each application’s recovery steps (plus a place to rehearse them before an auditor asks).

Compared with Veeam: Veeam Explorers restore items from SQL Server, Oracle, and SAP HANA too, so the gap is depth. Commvault adds SAP LaMa integration, Threat Scan that quarantines infected files, and Commvault Cleanroom for automated, isolated, and repeatable recovery testing.

Licensing: As of October 2026, Commvault’s SaaS pricing page lists VM backup at $102.49 per 10-VM pack per month and database backup starting at $90 per TB per month. Self-managed software is licensed on front-end terabytes and priced by quote.

Honest drawback: Application consistency is agent-based (the SAP HANA agent goes on both source and target machines), and Threat Scan on customer-managed storage needs access nodes you deploy. Cleanroom recovery targets are documented for Azure and AWS.

3. Rubrik: security-led cyber recovery and threat hunting

Rubrik Security Cloud is where the security team tends to get a vote, because the product starts from threat detection and works backward to recovery. Threat Monitoring scans backups for indicators of compromise using intelligence from Mandiant and Rubrik Zero Labs.

Threat Hunting runs file hashes and YARA rules across snapshot history to pinpoint a clean point, which is strongest on VM and file data, because file-based scanning reads storage files and a managed database like Aurora or RDS never exposes its contents as files to scan.

Pick it when: your estate still runs a large data center, cyber recovery is a board-level topic, and you want threat hunting, sensitive-data classification, and a $10M ransomware recovery warranty (Enterprise Edition, terms apply) from one vendor.

Compared with Veeam: Veeam has YARA scans and its own Threat Hunter, so both can hunt. Rubrik pushes further into the security workflow, with Threat Containment to isolate infected snapshots, backups for code in GitHub and Azure DevOps, and Agent Rewind to undo changes made by AI agents.

Licensing: Rubrik sells Foundation, Business, and Enterprise editions through sales, with Enterprise as a 3-year subscription. As of October 2026, its AWS Marketplace listing prices a 12-month Rubrik Cloud Cluster bundle with 6 back-end TB at $50,000, a software SKU for cluster deployments.

Honest drawback: Data-center deployments run on Rubrik clusters you operate. In the cloud, the Rubrik-managed model “moves data outside your AWS organization by design,” in Rubrik’s own words, which rules it out where policy keeps backups inside your account boundary.

4. Cohesity: deep data-center footprints, now including NetBackup

Cohesity closed its combination with Veritas’s enterprise data protection business on December 10, 2024, which made NetBackup a Cohesity product. The homepage now claims 12,000+ customers and two-thirds of the Global 500.

DataProtect covers vSphere (including VCF), Nutanix AHV, Hyper-V, and OpenStack, and FortKnox adds a fully managed cyber vault on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud for either DataProtect or NetBackup customers.

Pick it when: you’re consolidating a big NetBackup or VM estate and want Cohesity-, partner-, or customer-managed deployment options, including on-prem and sovereign cloud. Regulated teams also get WORM storage that Cohasset Associates assessed against SEC 17a-4(f), FINRA, and CFTC rules.

Compared with Veeam: Veeam licenses by the workload, while Cohesity sells capacity: DataProtect as a service bills on back-end terabytes and NetBackup on front-end terabytes. For a VM-dense estate with modest data per machine, run both numbers before you assume either one wins.

Licensing: Cohesity quotes its Core and Enterprise editions as 1-, 3-, or 5-year subscriptions. As of October 2026, AWS Marketplace lists DataProtect delivered as a service at $29,100 for 12 months per 10 back-end TB, premium support included.

Honest drawback: You’re buying two product lines with separate stacks, and NetBackup still ships on NetBackup Powered Appliances. Cloud Rebuild, its orchestrated cloud recovery, covers Terraform-provisioned environments and select AWS workloads.

5. NAKIVO: customer-installed software for cost-conscious virtualization estates

NAKIVO Backup & Replication (v11.2.2) has the same basic shape as Veeam: software you install on Windows, Linux, a NAS, or as a virtual appliance or AWS AMI. It protects VMware, Hyper-V, and Nutanix AHV VMs, plus physical servers and Microsoft 365.

NAKIVO says more than 16,000 businesses in 190 countries use it (the pricing page explains a lot of that).

Pick it when: you run a small or midsize virtualization estate, you’re happy to operate the backup server yourself, and the renewal number matters more to you than a SaaS console.

Compared with Veeam: The operating model matches, while the math lands far lower. On list prices, Pro Essentials at $2.45 per workload per month comes to $29.40 a year against $155 for Veeam’s Foundation tier on AWS Marketplace, and NAKIVO’s free edition covers 10 workloads for one year.

Licensing: As of October 2026, subscriptions are per workload and billed annually upfront: Pro Essentials at $2.45 (1-year) or $1.95 (3-year) per month, and Enterprise Essentials at $3.20 or $2.55. Perpetual licenses start at $229 per CPU socket, for 2 to 6 sockets.

Honest drawback: The Essentials tiers cap at 50 workloads, and backup to cloud or tape needs Enterprise Essentials or higher. On AWS, NAKIVO protects EC2 instances and treats S3 as a backup target, so managed databases need another tool.

6. Acronis: backup and endpoint security in one agent for MSPs and midmarket IT

Acronis Cyber Protect puts backup and security in one agent and one console, with ransomware and cryptojacking protection, anti-malware, URL filtering, and fail-safe patching that backs up a machine before a patch lands.

Service providers buy the MSP version, now called Acronis Cyber Platform, which integrates RMM, PSA, EDR, XDR, and MDR.

Pick it when: you look after a fleet of servers, workstations, and VMs (often for clients, as an MSP), and you’d like one agent handling both backup and endpoint protection. Acronis recommends Standard for up to 5 devices and Advanced beyond that.

Compared with Veeam: Veeam’s malware scanning works on the backup data, while Acronis also defends the protected machine itself. Standard covers Hyper-V, VMware vSphere, and Virtuozzo, and Backup Advanced adds Nutanix AHV, Oracle LVM, and SAP HANA.

Licensing: As of October 2026, per-device yearly subscriptions start at $85 (Standard), $109 (Backup Advanced), and $129 (Advanced), with up to 29% off 3-year terms and up to 40% off 5-year terms. The MSP platform is priced by storage consumption or per workload.

Honest drawback: Every machine or physical host needs a license, including each cluster node. Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace backup require Backup Advanced in a cloud deployment.

7. Druva: fully managed SaaS protection for endpoints and SaaS apps

Druva runs as a fully managed service with no backup servers, proxies, or repositories to size, covering endpoints, SaaS apps, AWS and Azure workloads, and data-center VMs.

On AWS it protects EC2, RDS, S3, and EFS, storing copies in a separate security domain outside your AWS account. A May 2026 help article extends its Airgap workflow to RDS databases and RDS clusters.

Pick it when: laptops and SaaS apps are a big part of your exposure, you want zero backup infrastructure, and a vendor-run copy outside your AWS organization fits your isolation model.

Compared with Veeam: Veeam’s self-managed AWS backup runs an appliance and temporary workers in your accounts, while Druva connects through AWS APIs and keeps the copies on its side. Its Ransomware Detection, in limited availability since September 2026, covers EC2, EBS, VMware, and Azure VMs.

Licensing: Druva publishes plans without dollar figures, sold per TB per month after deduplication and tracked as credits (one credit equals one TB-month of stored data). Its help center, in an article dated September 24, 2026, says backups are suspended when credit use hits 110%.

Honest drawback: The copies live in Druva’s cloud, which buys isolation at the cost of a vendor-run boundary. Its CloudRanger snapshot path, per a support matrix dated October 24, 2025, lists RDS cluster backup as unsupported, so check which path each database takes.

8. HYCU: Nutanix-native estates and SaaS-app coverage on R-Cloud

HYCU’s best card is Nutanix. The company says it’s the only data protection vendor with multiple Nutanix Validated Designs, its UI is built to feel like an extension of Nutanix Prism, and immutability runs through Nutanix Objects with a WORM lock.

HYCU says R-Cloud covers 100+ workloads, including SaaS and DevOps tools, and since September 2026 it can restore a single Azure DevOps work item, repository, or pipeline in place.

Pick it when: Nutanix AHV runs your data center and you also need to cover the long tail of SaaS apps (Atlassian, Microsoft 365, Entra ID, and Okta) that nobody on the team wants to own.

Compared with Veeam: Veeam supports Nutanix AHV among its 14 hypervisors, so the difference is depth. HYCU’s validated designs and Prism-style workflow suit teams that live in Nutanix all day, and R-Shield adds threat detection that analyzes live data with zero vendor access.

Licensing: As of October 2026, HYCU lists Microsoft 365 at $2.25 per user per month, its Atlassian, DevOps, and Productivity suites at $4 per user, and its Workforce Identity Suite at $1.20 per user. Infrastructure, object storage, and DBaaS protection are quoted.

Honest drawback: Self-managed protection runs on a HYCU backup controller you deploy (on AWS, HYCU recommends 8 vCPU cores and 8 GiB of memory), so you’re back to sizing and patching a server.

Which alternative to Veeam fits your estate?

If most of your critical data already lives in AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud managed services, start with the cloud-native pick at #1 and add Druva or HYCU only if endpoints or SaaS apps need their own coverage.

Mostly VMs in a data center? Then Commvault (applications), Rubrik (security tooling), and Cohesity (big legacy footprints) make the serious shortlist.

Small virtualization teams watching every dollar should price NAKIVO, and MSP-run fleets should trial Acronis. If Veeam already runs well on mostly VMs, keeping it is a perfectly good answer.

Switching to Veeam alternatives & competitors? Plan the overlap first

The part of a migration that bites later is the old restore points. Your Veeam jobs may hold monthly or yearly copies with retention measured in years, and restoring those takes Veeam, so keep enough licensing and one working backup server around until the last one expires.

Budget for that overlap in the business case (it’s the line finance always forgets), and run both tools side by side through at least one full backup cycle. Then restore something real from the new tool before you cancel anything.

A switch that looks cheap on the license sheet stops looking cheap the morning someone needs a two-year-old restore point and nobody kept the server that reads it.

FAQs

Is NAKIVO a good replacement for Veeam?

For a virtualization estate under 50 workloads that wants customer-installed software at lower list prices, yes, since NAKIVO’s Pro Essentials starts at $1.95 per workload per month on a 3-year term as of October 2026. On AWS it protects EC2 instances, so cloud databases need a second tool.

Which Veeam alternative has the strongest ransomware recovery?

Rubrik, Cohesity, and Commvault all scan backups and help you pick a last clean recovery point for VM images and file data. File-based scanning reads storage files, and a managed database like Aurora or RDS never exposes its contents as files to scan, so ask each vendor how it checks those backups.

How long should I keep Veeam after switching?

Keep a working Veeam server and enough licensing to restore your old backups until the longest retention period in those jobs expires, which can run for years with monthly or yearly copies. Run both tools in parallel for at least one full backup cycle before you stop new Veeam jobs.
