7 AI-First Alternatives to Alteryx, Scored for 2026

An analyst types “merge the three regional sales files and flag every order over $10,000” into an AI box. What comes back is either a finished answer or a workflow they can open and check step by step.

That difference matters when you’re leaving Alteryx, because you’re replacing workflows your team reruns, audits, and hands down (usually with a sticky note that says “don’t touch the Join tool”). A one-off answer covers none of that.

The AI-first alternatives to Alteryx below all start with AI, and they split hard on what it hands back.

So I scored seven of them on five points, from who builds the workflow to whether there’s a free way in.

Want the scores first? Here they are:

Prophecy tops this scorecard. It scores on all five criteria, because agents build the workflow from plain English, business users can check every step on a canvas, it runs in your own Databricks, Snowflake, or BigQuery, and it has a free tier.

The other competitors each win a narrower round: Anomaly AI turns spreadsheets into reports, Maia (from Matillion) gives data teams pipeline agents, and Hex is the AI notebook for SQL and Python people.

Dataiku fits prep that feeds machine learning, KNIME is the free desktop canvas, and Databricks suits teams whose data already lives there.

Tool	Agent builds the workflow	Steps you can inspect	Runs in your warehouse	Built for business users	Free option
Prophecy	Yes	Yes, as gems	Yes (paid plans)	Yes	Yes (Starter)
Anomaly AI	No, analysis only	SQL logic	Connects to some	Yes	Yes (30 credits)
Maia	Yes	Plan and canvas	Yes	Data teams	14-day trial
Hex	Notebook cells	Notebook cells	Queries it	Via Threads	Yes (Community)
Dataiku	Yes (Cobuild)	Yes (visual Flow)	Unclear	Partial	Free Edition
KNIME	Partial (K-AI)	Yes (nodes)	Desktop	Partial	Yes (open source)
Databricks	Yes (Genie Code)	Yes (canvas)	Databricks only	Partial	Free Edition

The five-point AI-first scorecard

Alteryx is a fantastic tool, and it has real AI now. Ask Alteryx (formerly Copilot) adds and configures tools on the canvas, documents workflows, and can run them, while Agent Studio turns governed datasets into conversational agents still labeled Public Preview.

Both need Professional or Enterprise, so Starter ($250 per user a month, billed annually, as of October 2026) gets neither. That’s AI added to a mature, hand-built canvas, while an AI-first tool starts from your plain-English goal, builds the workflow, and hands it to a person to review.

Here’s how each tool on this list got scored.

Agent builds the workflow. A strong answer means you type a goal and get a multi-step workflow back. A helper that suggests the next tool on a canvas you build by hand earns a “Partial.”

Steps you can inspect. You should be able to open any step, see what it does, and check the data it produced, ideally without reading code.

Runs in your warehouse. Top marks go to tools that run inside your own cloud data platform, so data stays where your security team already watches it.

Built for business users. Check who the vendor designs for. If the docs aim the AI at people who audit code, an analyst who lives in spreadsheets will hit a wall.

Free option. A free tier lets you test on your own messy files before procurement gets involved. A time-boxed trial counts for less, because two weeks goes fast (especially when one of them is month-end).

1. Prophecy: top score among AI-first alternatives to Alteryx

The platform suits business teams that want agents doing the building and people doing the checking.

Scorecard read: Five for five, with every step visible and processing in your own warehouse on paid plans.

In practice: You describe the goal in plain English, and the Transform Agent (the default agent) builds a visual workflow. Each step becomes a gem, the tool’s name for one box on the canvas (Filter, Join, Deduplicate, and so on), with a visual view and a code view.

You can run the pipeline up to any gem and profile the data at that point, with null percentages and top values. The agent doesn’t deploy on its own, so a person always signs off before production.

It keeps going after prep, too: the agent explores the prepared data in chat and builds Analyses, which are dashboards with key insights, charts, and recommendations tied to the pipeline. Business users can set a region or date range and rerun it themselves.

Workflows compile to SQL (the language databases speak) stored in Git (a full history of every edit). Paid plans run that SQL in your own Databricks, Snowflake, or BigQuery account, so financial and operations analysts work under existing governance with no engineering ticket.

For Alteryx shops, the importer turns Designer files (version 2023.2 and later) into workflows on the canvas. The company says the transpiler gets a workflow to roughly 90%, and an analyst closes the rest with AI assistance.

Schedules don’t come across, so you set them up again in the built-in scheduler, which runs on time-based or file-arrival triggers (S3 and SFTP) with email alerts.

Cost: As of October 2026, Starter is free with 20 credits a month on embedded DuckDB. Professional is $150 per user a month with 5 Alteryx imports a month, and Enterprise Express is $4,000 a month for up to 20 users, billed annually.

Where it scores low: Only one person can edit a project with the agent at a time, so pair-building a workflow means taking turns.

2. Anomaly AI: plain-English reports from spreadsheets and marketing data

Anomaly AI is the easiest AI-first Alteryx alternative to pick up when your Alteryx work mostly ends in a report.

Scorecard read: Top marks for business users and the free plan, low marks for building workflows, since it’s an analysis layer with no pipeline builder.

In practice: Anomaly AI calls itself an “AI Data Analyst for Large Datasets & Spreadsheets.” It connects to Excel and CSV files up to 1GB, Google Sheets, GA4, Google Ads, Search Console, BigQuery, Snowflake, and MySQL.

You ask questions in plain English, and the AI cleans up duplicates, date formats, and missing values before building dashboards or Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and PDF reports. Paid plans add scheduled email reports, and you can inspect the SQL logic behind the numbers.

Its own comparison table names marketers, consultants, operators, and data-light teams as the ideal users, which tells you exactly who it was built for.

Cost: As of October 2026, the Free plan gives 30 credits a month with no card, Pro is $25 a month, Analyst is $90 a month, and Team is $45 per seat a month with a two-seat minimum. Enterprise pricing is custom, and paying yearly knocks 20% off every plan.

Where it scores low: Anomaly AI’s own Alteryx page says it “does not replace Alteryx for complex, scheduled ETL pipelines with conditional branching.” SOC 2 Type I and Type II audits are still listed as “Planned,” and PostgreSQL is “Coming Soon.”

In a trial, I’d feed it your ugliest recurring spreadsheet and check whether the SQL it shows matches how your team defines the metric.

3. Maia: an agentic data team for pipeline engineering

Scorecard read: Strong on agent building, review, and warehouse execution, but it’s designed for data teams, and the free path is a 14-day trial.

In practice: Maia, Matillion’s AI data automation platform, runs a set of agents called Maia Team that plan, build, test, deploy, and fix data pipelines. A request becomes a reviewable, step-by-step plan, and in Maia’s words, “Nothing changes until a human approves.”

Work happens on a low-code canvas or in SQL and Python, using pushdown ELT (data is loaded first, then transformed inside your warehouse). It runs on Snowflake, Databricks, Amazon Redshift, or Google BigQuery, with 150+ connectors, and Maia says it’s trusted by 1,000+ data teams.

The Alteryx angle is its Migration Agent, which lists Alteryx under “Supported platforms” and promises “Individual pipelines converted in minutes, and full migration projects completed in weeks.” That’s Maia’s claim, and access runs through a sales demo.

Cost: As of October 2026, Maia uses consumption-based credits across Developer, Teams, and Scale editions with no published dollar prices. The trial lasts 14 days and comes loaded with 500 credits.

Where it scores low: It’s built and sold for data teams, it needs a cloud data platform, and it publishes no prices. Maia’s own comparison says it “requires a mindset shift” toward “goal-based oversight,” which is a fair warning for analysts used to building by hand.

4. Hex: AI notebooks for SQL and Python analysis

Hex is the AI-first pick for analysts who’d happily write a SQL query before they’d drag a tool onto a canvas.

Scorecard read: The agent writes notebook cells you can audit if you read code, business users get Threads, and there’s a free Community plan.

In practice: Hex is built around notebooks (documents that mix code, results, and charts in cells) for SQL and Python. Its Notebook Agent creates and edits SQL, Python, Markdown, Pivot, and Chart cells, and Hex aims it at “technical users who can audit the SQL and code.”

Threads is the plain-language side, where non-technical people ask questions and get answers, including from Slack by mentioning @Hex. Hex connects to warehouses such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, and Redshift, and the Team plan adds scheduled runs and alerts.

Cost: As of October 2026, Community is free, Professional is $36 per editor a month, Team is $75 per editor a month, and Enterprise is custom. Editors get 30 AI credits a month on Professional and 40 on Team, and top-ups cost $25 per 50 credits.

Where it scores low: It’s code-first with no visual, no-code prep canvas, so an Alteryx user who has never written SQL faces a learning curve. AI use is metered too, and once credits run out, agent prompts stop until you top up.

5. Dataiku: prep that feeds machine learning

Dataiku is the strongest AI-first Alteryx alternative when your prep feeds machine learning models.

Scorecard read: Cobuild earns it a strong build-and-review score, and the free path is a self-installed edition.

In practice: Dataiku describes itself as “analytics, models, and AI agents together in a single governed system.” Its Prepare recipe has “100+ built-in data transformers,” and teams can work in visual recipes or in Python, R, and SQL, with visual ML and AutoML on the same platform.

Cobuild, generally available since June 18, 2026, is the AI-first piece. You describe a goal, and Cobuild builds the pipelines, models, agents, and apps as a visual Flow that you review and approve before production.

Dataiku also says it’s been named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for AI Platforms for Data Science and ML for the “fifth consecutive year.” For Alteryx shops, there’s no public converter, so moving over means a rebuild, with Cobuild and Dataiku partners doing much of the lifting.

Cost: As of October 2026, Dataiku is quote-based, with a 14-day free trial (no card needed) and a self-installed Free Edition.

Where it scores low: It’s a lot of platform, with an enterprise price tag to match, if all you need is prep and analysis. Teams with no plans for models may end up paying for rooms they never walk into.

6. KNIME: a free, open-source visual canvas

KNIME is the closest thing to the Alteryx canvas you can download for free.

Scorecard read: Every node is inspectable and the platform is free, but the AI assists while you build, and it runs on your desktop.

In practice: KNIME Analytics Platform is open source (GPLv3) and puts desktop visual workflows, 300+ connectors, statistics, ML, and GenAI on one canvas. Its K-AI assistant got an upgrade in version 5.12 (July 2026), when build mode started inspecting your workflow before changing it.

K-AI can also build data apps from a prompt, and it runs on OpenAI’s GPT-4.1 models with the provider fixed. KNIME has nodes for building your own agents and MCP services, too (MCP is a standard way for AI tools to connect to software).

Cost: As of October 2026, the Analytics Platform is free, with 20 K-AI interactions a month on a free account. Pro starts at $19 a month with 500 K-AI interactions, Team starts at $99 a month with three users, and Business Hub is priced on request.

Where it scores low: It’s AI-assisted, so you still build the workflow node by node. Free local batch execution was deprecated in April 2026, so scheduling and automation need a paid plan.

7. Databricks: data and AI at lakehouse scale

Scorecard read: Lakeflow Designer scores well on AI building and visible steps, but it only runs on Databricks, and the data team owns the setup.

In practice: The Databricks Data + AI Platform is a lakehouse (a data lake and a warehouse in one) for data and platform teams. Its no-code prep canvas, Lakeflow Designer, went generally available in June 2026 and runs on Genie Code, so you can describe a transformation in plain English.

Designer workflows compile to code governed by Unity Catalog, and Databricks says over 3,000 customers have used it. Business users ask questions in Genie One, which answers from Genie Agents that data teams set up with trusted tables and rules.

On Alteryx, Databricks lists it as a partner and talks about “legacy self-service data preparation tools,” with bulk migration through Lakebridge still marked as upcoming.

Cost: As of October 2026, it’s pay-as-you-go in DBUs (Databricks Units), with SQL Serverless listed at $0.70/DBU on AWS US East. There’s no per-user license for Lakeflow Designer, and you can start on a 14-day trial or a quota-limited Free Edition.

Genie One and Genie Agents are free for users through January 31, 2027, though that covers LLM usage only, and compute is still billed.

Where it scores low: Everything runs on Databricks, and setup sits with the data team, so it shines once your data already lives there. Custom operators also need Python.

Which AI-first Alteryx alternative should you shortlist?

Start with what your Alteryx workflows produce today, because that narrows the field fast.

If business analysts own recurring prep, start with the #1 pick, since agents build the workflow and analysts check every step.

If your Alteryx work ends in spreadsheet or marketing reports, Anomaly AI is the cheapest thing to test.

If a data team will own the pipelines, compare Maia and Databricks, and let the warehouse you already pay for break the tie.

If your analysts already write SQL or Python, Hex will feel like home within a week.

If your prep feeds models, Dataiku earns the demo, and if budget is the hard limit, KNIME’s free canvas is the safest first stop.

I’d shortlist two or three, because every trial eats real analyst hours.

Four tests for your first trial week

A demo shows you the happy path, so use your first week to see what a normal month looks like.

1. One messy multi-file join. Feed it three files with mismatched column names and count how much you fix by hand.
2. One scheduled refresh. Set a real workflow to run on a timer and check what tells you when it fails.
3. One “explain this step” check. Have a second person open a step they didn’t build and explain it back to you.
4. One cost estimate. Price your actual monthly runs, seats, and AI credits, then put that number next to your Alteryx renewal.

Whichever tool passes all four with the fewest workarounds is the one your team will still be using next year.

FAQ

Is Anomaly AI a full replacement for Alteryx?

It can cover reporting work, but Anomaly AI says itself that it won’t replace Alteryx for pipelines. Its Alteryx page states that it “does not replace Alteryx for complex, scheduled ETL pipelines with conditional branching.”

Can Maia convert Alteryx workflows?

Yes, Maia’s Migration Agent lists Alteryx among its supported platforms. Access runs through a sales demo, and Maia publishes no Alteryx-specific success rate, so test it on a few real workflows first.

Which AI-first Alteryx alternative is cheapest to start with?

KNIME Analytics Platform, Hex Community, and Databricks Free Edition all cost nothing to start. Each free tier has limits (20 K-AI interactions a month on a free KNIME account, quota caps on Databricks Free Edition), so budget for a paid plan once you automate.
