C-BIT and substances Cognitive Behavioural integrated Treatment (C-BIT): A treatment manual for substance misuse in people with severe mental health problems Hermine Graham with Alex Copello, Max Birchwood, Kim Mueser, Jim Orford, Dermot McGovern, Emma Atkinson, Jenny Maslin, Mike Preece, Derek Jobin and George Georgiou, Wiley (2004) ISBN 0470854383, 24.95, pp300
This is an extremely well written and presented book by clinicians on a subject that is not often acknowledged. Many clinicians working with psychosis (especially early intervention teams) struggle with this problem and in my experience are frustrated by other professionals/carers telling them to 'stop him taking drugs' without much guidance as to how we may perform such an overwhelming task.
Although described as a manual, the book is careful to provide the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of cognitive behavioural therapy. Prior knowledge of CBT would be useful but not essential as the writers produce extremely detailed information in a very helpful format with the key points summarised at the end of each chapter. The model is presented in clear stages with constant reference to cognitive models and individual formulation as a means of explanation for interventions. The sections on motivation, self-esteem and lifestyle balance provide practical guidance and could be utilised within other clinical groups. The use of case studies throughout and the provision of work sheets in the appendix enhance the book immensely.
I would recommend this book to any clinicians working with people with severe mental health problems and substance misuse as well as those studying psychosocial interventions or CBT.
