Renewing Social and Economic Progress in Africa

Journal of Third World Studies,  Spring 2004  by Wekesa, Peter Wafula

It is true, as is emphasized in the book, that any analysis on the way forward for the African continent must transcend the blueprints inspired by the alarmist prognostics of gloom and doom. Most African states and societies, for instance, which have been subject to extreme destabilizations and so called crises are continually developing new strategies of extra diversity and inventiveness which offer proof that the continent, so often said to be in 'shades of darkness', is in fact a place of unrivalled change and mobility. There is hardly a single sphere of life that has escaped transformations of great significance. It is within these spheres and transformations that the seeds of African progress and prospects could be deciphered. Indeed, coming as it does, at the beginning of the twenty first century, the essays in this book contribute in a substantive way to an effort to develop an agenda for social and economic revival and progress for the continent. It is a must read for those interested in understanding the plight of Africa and Africans and the continent's prospect for future development.
