Homemade Ice Cream

Southern Living,  Aug 2005

Treat yourself to a heavenly dip at Jaxson's.

The smell of sugar fills the air. A true South Florida landmark, Jaxson's is an ice-cream parlor and candy store designed like a general store. License plates, advertising signs, and worn-out bicycles cover the walls. Bins of hard-to-find sweets, such as rock candy and wax bottles, give patrons a slice of yesteryear. Generations of people order outside at the walk-up counter or enjoy their dip inside, satisfying their cravings.

No Such Thing as Plain Vanilla

You'll find almost 60 homemade flavors, plus loads of sprinkles, nuts, crushed-up pieces of candy, sauces, and whipped toppings. You never know what flavor Jaxson's will come up with next. For the Tomato Day Festival a few years back, they made a tomato-basil sorbet. Right now, they're selling vanilla ice cream with Grape-Nuts-you know, the crunchy breakfast cereal-laced throughout. Once they even created Cherry Chocolate Pop Rocks Millennium.

Forget Portion Control

Aside from everything being homemade, Jaxson's is also known for its portions. For a challenge, order the Original Kitchen Sink. "It is our signature dessert," says owner Monroe Udell. "We just shovel everything in it. For $9.95 per person, you get whatever flavors you want, whatever toppings you want, with sparklers and a siren. It's an event."

You can also enjoy about a dozen different kinds of salads and sandwiches. It's hard to finish your meal, though, when you know what kind of dessert awaits.

Jaxson's Ice Cream Parlor: 128 South Federal Highway, Dania Beach, FL 33004; (954) 923-4445.
