Shutters That Saved The Day

Southern Living,  Oct 2004

These louvered doors link a kitchen and living room and also keep this family's furniture from ruin.

Just as North Carolina homeowners Susan Garrity and Jeff Basham were beginning to enjoy their recently remodeled family room, they realized that their beloved pet was too. The new doorway connecting the kitchen and living area gave Rosebud the cat easy access to a tantalizingly fluffy rug and sofa that she loved to sink her claws into.

The idea of closing off the two rooms with paneled doors wasn't appealing to the couple. They wanted the openness, but they had to keep Rosebud from shredding their furnishings. Designer Judy Pickett, who had worked with the couple on the renovation, came up with a creative solution that wouldn't detract from the room's decor. Custom white louvered doors solved the problem and add to the room's simple style.

Unfortunately, it didn't take long for Rosebud to figure out how to use the pass-through window. Phase two called for adding coordinating shutters to the large window, which also unified the entire wall.
