Nashville's Best Breakfasts
Southern Living, Jan 2004 by Canedo, Vivian
From pancakes to pastries, follow us to this city's top morning spots.
Nothing gears you up more for a day of sightseeing and shopping in Nashville than a leisurely-and bountiful-breakfast. Luckily, pancake houses and coffee shops nearly outnumber would-be country stars in the Music City. Check out our favorite places to grab a morning meal.
Pancake Pantry
Ask the locals where to get a good breakfast, and they'll blurt out "Pancake Pantry." Many revere this joint as a Nashville institution. With standard blueberry and pecan pancakes as well as innovative Caribbean, Swiss, and orange-walnut varieties, this local gem offers the perfect option for every taste. The sweet potato pancakes with cinnamon-cream syrup rank highest on our list. Put convention aside, and try this decadent combination.
It's a good idea to visit this popular spot on a weekday morning or from 6 to 7 a.m. or 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday to avoid the long lines. 7796 21st Avenue South; (615) 383-9333. Breakfast entrees: $3.95-$ 10.75.
Fido
For breakfast with a bite, visit Fido in the heart of Hillsboro Village. From the puppy photos that act as table markers to the flavorful Doghouse Drinks, this canine-themed coffee-house offers both a playful atmosphere and menu. The Bohemian college hangout features a spicy standout called the Village Burrito-a mammoth spinach tortilla stuffed with eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach, and feta and topped with fresh salsa. The Egg McFido satisfies traditionalists with its melted cheese and scrambled eggs piled high on your choice of bagel.
Caffeine hounds with a sweet tooth should try Fido's Doghouse Drinks. The hotdog creatively blends brewed coffee with mocha, cinnamon, and whipped cream. The Milkbone-a heaping mix of espresso, milk, and whipped cream drizzled with vanilla, honey, and graham cracker crumbs-also serves as a sweet treat. 1812 21st Avenue South; (615) 777-3436. Breakfast entrees: $3.50-37.50.
Noshville
Enjoy a Big Apple breakfast at this New York-style delicatessen. Whether you chomp on a bagel with schmear, nosh on a potato knish (a doughy pastry stuffed with potatoes), or ogle the oversize omelets, you'll feel like a real New Yorker here. The fluffy wedges of French toast sprinkled with powdered sugar are to die for, and the veggie omelet with a hunk of melted cheese: fuhgettaboutit.
With generous portions and a wide selection of almost everything, Noshville attracts a diverse clientele. On any given day, college students, businesspeople, retirees, and country music execs drop in for breakfast. Stop by the deli counter on your way out to pick up pastries or black-and-white cookies for later. 1918 Broadway; (615) 329-6674. Breakfast entrees: $3.95-$7.95. VIVlANCANEDO
