Rogue brews up Irish lager.'s Irish-style lager beer

Modern Brewery Age,  Jan 16, 2006

In honor of St. Patrick's day, Rogue Ales of Newport, OR, has produced Kells, an Irish-style lager beer named for the Book of Kells, and ancient Irish religious manuscript. Rogue brewmaster John Maier said the beer is "ineffably quaffable." and can also serve as a key ingredient in a Black and Tan.

"Kells is perfect for floating Guinness," Maier says, "and luck has nothing to do with it." The beer won two silver medals at the World Beer Championships and a silver at the Australian International Beer Awards. Judges at the World Beer Championships praised Kells "for its sweetish aromas follow through with a full malty and rounded palate ... finished with a hint of hop bitterness ... quite a dry style, with plenty of substance." It is brewed with Great Western two-row, French Carapilnser malt, Sterling hops and fermented with a Czech pilsner yeast. The beer undergoes one week of primary and five weeks of secondary fermentation, and emerges at 12 Plato, with 28 international bitterness units and 5% alcohol by volume.
