Industry: Email Alert RSS FeedA-B says "Prevent, don't provide"
Modern Brewery Age, May 30, 2005
According to a 2003 National Academy of Sciences Report, two-thirds of teens who drink get alcohol from their parents or other adults. Anheuser-Busch, together with several other groups, recently launched a new program titled "Prevent, Don't Provide" that reminds adults not to buy alcohol for minors or provide it to them at parties. Anheuser said it will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the National Fatherhood Initiative (NFI) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) in this effort.
"We want to help send the message to adults that providing alcohol to teens and their teens' friends at parties, even for special events like graduation, is irresponsible and illegal," says August A. Busch IV, president, Anheuser-Busch, Inc., St. Louis.
The key, according to the new program, lies with parents. According to the 2004 Roper Youth Report, 75 percent of teens ages 13-17 say their parents are the No. 1 influence in their decisions about whether or not they drink alcohol.
Program organizers say, "The 'Prevent, Don't Provide' program challenges adults to 'Think Again' if they consider it's acceptable to buy alcohol for teens or provide it to them at parties."
