Pfizer promotes ShareCard at community events

Drug Store News,  May 20, 2002  by Diane West,  James Frederick

WASHINGTON -- Pfizer has begun signing up seniors for its ShareCard prescription drug program through community events that are sometimes hosted by community pharmacies. The ShareCard allows low-income Medicare recipients to buy a month's worth of one Pfizer prescription drug for a flat $15 fee or multiple Pfizer prescription medications at $15 apiece or a one-month supply.

One recent pharmacy-based ShareCard event took place at a Bladensburg Road CVS here. The April 25 event, according to a Pfizer spokesman, enrolled more than 100 qualified seniors. Dr. Michael Richardson, senior deputy director for the Office of Primary Care, Prevention and Planning, offered the support of Washington mayor Anthony Williams' office and praised Pfizer "for taking the initiative to fill a health care void for many of DC's neediest seniors," according to a Pfizer spokesman. Richardson called the Share Card program "an immense help for seniors while Congress continues to debate a Medicare drug benefit."

Several churches and community organizations in the area are expected to continue the ShareCard enrollment push until a Medicare drug benefit is passed. In March, the Texas Association of Homes and Services for the Aging helped Pfizer launch ShareCard campaigns throughout Texas at about 150 TAHSA sites. Nationwide, there are more than 90,000 seniors enrolled in the ShareCard program.
